550i Engine briefly ran without oil, loud knocking
Hello,
So I purchased a 550i from auction locally on spur of the moment type deal and when brought home the car had dead battery. Got new battery and checked oil level wad below minimum. Added 3+ quarts and tried starting and was welcomed with loud knocking sound. Watched a bunch of videos and probably rod bearing or such?? I took oil pan off to check for metal and found shrapnel paper thin metal cornflakes size pieces. Can anyone tell me where and what exactly failed and what can be done to repair. Just need to know if it's repairable or not. Car is project car so willing to do myself no time crunch. Please see pictures I added from oil pan pieces Any reply greatly appreciated. |

Yikes, yep, looks like shredded bearings! But did you actually drive it home without issues...? Bearings are replaceable, the question is what damage is there to the rods, crankshaft, block, etc...

Yep that engine is f u c k e d
There is no way the crank journals aren't scored if the bearings are literally in the pan.

Yeah whoever had this car before really didn't know what they were doing. One of the sparkplugs I replaced wasn't even in all the way and they left a rubber grommet in one. Atleast 2 coils weren't working and literally had zero oil in motor. I never drove or started the car since battery was dead from auction. Glad I didn't.
So anyone have a rough estimate would be for repair like this? I know it ain't a walk in the park since don't really know the extent of the damage caused. But I did find another motor that been tested and compression tested with 2 year warranty for 5k free shipping. Planning to swap it myself I have done a few engine swaps and have the tools to do it. Any input appreciated. Thanks |

Agree with the swap. No telling where it ends with that engine.
