N55 Knocking on cold start
Hey, I have a 2011 535i Xdrive with about 90k miles on it. whenever I cold start the car, the engine knocks. Once the car is warmed up it completely goes away. This has been going on for a little less than a year now and it's driving me crazy. Recently I have noticed that sometimes comes back at idle.
i attached a video of the sound on a cold start. Please let me know if you all have any tips for me. https://share.icloud.com/photos/095D...sjCHXNcl55rIcA Last edited by Hozmoz; 02-20-2024 at 03:45 PM.. |

sounds like one of ur rod bearings might be starting to go. My car had the same noise but much louder and when i dropped the oil pan i found out the oil pickup tube was broken off and was sitting in the pan along with my cylinder 6 bearing completely toast. so basically my car starved itself of oil lol

i don't think its rod bearings because the sound completely goes away when the car warms up, I talked to a mechanic and he said it might be lifters

If only on Cold start, Check your Vanos Solenoids and inspect or clean them, or replace as needed, they tend to be noisy on Cold start up until warm.

This is exactly what I did and my cold start knock went away. I did this months ago just as preventative maintenance a few months ago and my car felt smoother as well as the knock noise going away on cold start. Funny thing is I wasn’t even trying to fix the knock lol. So I guess the fix found it’s way to me. But yeah definitely try the Vanos and clean both solenoids.
