F10 535i xdrive ZF8HP weird shifting problem
Hi everyone.
OK, I have an odd shifting problem with my 2012 535I xdrive. So, when accelerating forward in automatic, when the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, it hits hard. It also feels like it engages and disengages a couple times before it finally fully locks in. It shifts smooth in all other gears and downshifts smooth in all gears. It's not as noticeable when the car is cold but is VERY noticeable once the car is warmed up. Now, here is the weird part, it doesn't do it when accelerating while turning. So, when you are at a stop and you are turning either left or right, it shifts smooth as butter from 1st gear into 2nd gear. Why? Things I have done: 1st - Replaced fluid and filter. No change 2nd - Replaced all shifting solenoids on the mechatronics. Replaced fluid but reused same filter/pan since it was barely used. No Change I feel like its something internal to the transmission since it only does it when shifting into 2nd gear. However, I'm confused why it doesn't do it while turning in either direction? Why would it shift smoothly while turning? Any Ideals? |

I elected to purchase refurbished OEM solenoids instead of new aftermarket. I bought then off of Ebay. Regardless, the symptom did not change at all with different solenoids.

I would say it is xdrive related, as it is not banging while you are steering to somwhere, left or right, so transfer case brings all the stress to front axles. Maybe your problem is not related to gearbox....

zrile - I'm not familiar with the xdrive system but if it's like most other all-wheel drive systems and there was a problem with the transfer case, why would it only happen in 2nd gear?

Do the front and rear differential fluid and the transfer case fluid all in one service, I did that and it shifts so much better. Our transmissions are weird in first and second gear, I believe there is a thread on it as well. If you decide to do the full service I suggested, you may as well replace the flex disc/Guibo since the exhaust will come off do perform these services. Totally worth it.
