Jerk when shifting from Park to Drive
Hello folks!
My car got a new transfer case and adaptation reset past weekend at dealership. And I noticed noticeable her while shifting from P to D. Never noticed that before. Would it be a temporary thing? Should I be concerned? |

I've had that happen once or twice as it went away. I suspect it to possibly be the transmission mount. But have not inspected yet. Also had an issue where it would not shift at all. No R or D. Had to put in N and rock the car back and forth for it to go. Someone told me it could be the shift solenoid in the mechatronic unit. I plan on replacing all of the solenoids if I decide to keep the car long term.

I have had this jerk for over 3 years... Never found the solution, but everything works fine. Someone mentioned it could be related to valve body aka mechatronics but who knows.

I had something similar happening when shifting from P to D, it was slight hesitation followed by a jerk. Try resetting throttle body adaptation, that is what has solved my issue.
I've found this on another thread: 1) hit start button once to turn on power (Don't start the engine, don't press brake pedal) 2) then press the accelerator down to the floor for 5 sec 3) then hit start button once to turn off power (while keeping the foot on the accelerator pedal) 4) then remove foot from accelerator 5) then wait for 2 minutes (I waited 30 sec and it seems to work) 4) then start the engine like normal and try it out! |

+1 on the Mechatronics. Had the same thing in a previous 5 and 7 series. Same engine. Have your Indy look at it to determine if you have one.

Just to touch base with you guys.
I have no idea what it depends on. Sometimes there is almost no jerk at all. But if I keep switching from P to R then P to D eventually it will happen again. At different extend at different times. Interestingly enough, bmw mechanics don't consider that as an issue as it is not happenenig on regular basis without playing with the gearbox. What do you guys think about that? |

Mine used to slam in gears after a few WOT on the highway. After a bit of easy driving it went away. I have since done a transmission pan and fluid change havent flushed it. The filter looked dark and magnets had a tad bit of dusting at 101k miles. Used liquimoly atf kit from fcpeuro. Ever since then havent had the issue of slamming into gears. At the time you could feel the entire car jerk from drive to park. All good so far.

Update seems to be software issue on my end it started again. Its very rare and only sometimes when I give a wot. If I shut my car off and turn back on it goes away. Mine is outdated anyway. I have to take my car in for a dme update.

Update:
BMW said it is normal operation. No faulty codes. I really do think it got worse after transfer box replacement. Perhaps, software update needed? Just attaching the video. At times it would actually produce even harder push... Last edited by ashmailusa; 06-22-2020 at 01:08 AM.. |

I have my trans update to date and still have this issue... Now that I think about it the issue hasn't happen in a while. I usually notice the issue during winter/fall time. Could be due to old fluids as I am at 118miles and still on original trans fluid.

Hey guys, I have also experienced the same transmission issues in my 2011 535i xdrive (125,000 miles). My car started shifting really hard from PARK to drive, it would have a slight hesitation and then lunge forward hard. I checked everything from transmission fluid level to resetting all the adaptations. Nothing seemed to work. It wasn’t until I noticed a slight oil leak on the corner of the transmission pan, Removed the pan pulled the rubber seal out to inspect it and noticed it had a slice in it. I replaced the transmission pan gasket serviced with fluid drove it for about 45 miles and now it is shifting smooth and perfect like
It was new. I could only assume that the transmission pump was trying to suck fluid and with the transmission gasket Being torn, it was causing the transmission to suck air. I hope this post helps everybody with the same issue. I know it gets rather frustrating. |
