Logically I agree that one would expect that if there is only space for one "ridge" on the side of the center console, that it would be on the passenger side. I'm guessing that the placement of the leather ridge on the driver side has to do with the placement of the idrive. Without the potential obstruction of a ridge on the right side of the center console, the right hand will not be bumping into anything as the idrive is manipulated. Without trying it I can't tell if that is the issue. But that is a theory anyway.

the location of the iDrive in the former 5 series was right under the driver fingers when his hand is resting on the armrest, there was no effort to be done in order to manipulate it but now the driver has to move his hand forward and to the passenger side in order to use it. this is really a step backward in terms of practicality. The iDrive belongs to the co-Pilot now.

I think it will be fine....I did do a double take at first, I thought they forgot to reverse the console for the Brits! I'm sure it will feel very natural with all the controls...they put a lot of thinking a design into that stuff!

Sorry, but I'm not following the consensus of the centre console supposedly being angled towards the passenger. If anything it looks like F10 has its console directed more towards the driver than the previous gen, as it should be.
I think the reason why someone would think that its angled towards the passenger is maybe because of an optical illusion. Here, let me demonstrate (important bit in red): Besides, you shouldn't be tinkering around with the iDrive when you're pressing on anyway. Given the choice, I'd rather have a gearlever closer by than the iDrive controller, no? EDIT: Now that I compare the F10 cockpit with the previous gen as posted by Technic, in the previous gen when moving your hand from the gearlever to the iDrive controller or vice versa, you'd have to move your whole arm back to front. With the F10 setup, it's simply moving your hand from left to right. To my mind, it's more intuitive and less likely for you to need to take your eyes off the road, since the iDrive happens to be a couple of inches portside of the gearlever. Also much less of a chance of accidentally fumbling around on the iDrive menu when you only meant to change gears. EDIT #2: I can understand why people would find the strip of leather on the driver's side of the console a bit odd, but as far as I can tell, that strip is there purely for styling only. As far as ergonomics go, it shouldn't make any difference whatsoever. EDIT #3: I know I'm probably getting anal about this, but final thought to support my EDIT #2: Last edited by kooper; 12-18-2009 at 03:00 PM.. |

^ it should be pointed at the driver IMO. One of the things I've always preferred in my e46 over the e90's e60-like flat faced dash...
Cant wait to see this car with sport packages and M-Sport kits...

I agree with kooper, it does look like the dashboard is angled towards the driver, as it really should be. That has been one of the classic BMW traits that was somehow lost in the most recent batch of BMWs. Im happy to see it making its way back and hopefully gets more and more angled with successive generations.
