Update iDrive to new version?
For the experts out there - any chance this functionality will be available to 2011 5er's via software update, or is this an "all-new iDrive":

I think new hardware is required. The 535 I just ordered for ED in October, thus a September build, lists "6VC Combox Controller" on the equipment list.
A couple others, which may or may not be new for September production are "8TL Daytime driving lights front and rear active", and "4NE Blow-by heater."

The new functionality requires some new hardware.
Specifically, the MULF (which is the brains of the ipod interface) is different between the two versions. The rest of the hardware is likely the same, but the new version of the MULF requires some additional wiring which likely isn't going to be present in the pre-september builds. I don't think that we'll know for sure until the new parts are in the catalog.

OK, hate to rain on the parade, but here is text from the dealer bulletin posted HERE:
"Beginning with September production there will be enhancements for BMW Assist with Bluetooth (639) and iPod/USB Adapter (6FL). These enhancements will extend the functionality through improved integration of mobile devices into the vehicle. These new features are made possible by hardware advances and are not “retrofittable” to pre-September builds." The bulletin also mentions that the new system no longer uses the iPod Y-Cable; it will instead connect using a standard iPod cable.

You are absolutely correct. These posts led me to check back with the dealer. They are not 100% sure but to be safe, I have delayed my order to September but still want confirmation that the new features will be onboard.
