Nice write up... I do my bike oil changes but have yet to get my hands dirty on a car - maybe will try once I have my own garage (condo now).

I have heard different things about the ZF auto tranny maintenece intervals. One thing I do believe is that you won't see the benefits from early change interval until way down the line. So if you have it done then sell the car a few years later, you are doing the future owner(s) a great service. If you plan on being buried in the car, then it's probably a good preventative measure.

Thanks! I plan to change the tranny oil on my E90 330i when it hits 60K. It's a cheap insurance and just give a peace of mind. I believe dealer can do it for ~$250 or less(still high compare to some standard cars)?

A San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles) dealership quoted ~$210 to do an "oil change" for a 2011 550i.
They stated the oil was ~$9/qt and that I would need 9 qts. They said the filter was ~$35, and then a 1/2hr of labor would be charged. They said there was no difference between oil change and oil service. What is going on here? |

Item Synthetic Motor Oil-5W-30 Part number: 07 51 0 017 866 High-performance engine oils meet or exceed SAE and CLMC specifications to help keep your engine running smoothly and cleanly. 1 qt. bottle. Item details 2011 5 Series 550i Sedan $6.25 The filter is about 10-15 bucks. What's going on is that they are trying to nickel and dime a brother to death. They figure you're probably some rich schmuck that has more money than time. Take the BMW badge off the car and it like any other car. Steel, plastic and rubber. Why does the dealer for my other car charge $80, when they both take synthetic oil and both have cartridge type filters? |

Farther west. Do you have any recommended local dealers? You can PM if you prefer. (Edit: Scratch that, apparently I don't have enough posts to qualify for PM ).

I try and avoid the dealer like the plague. You must be Rusnak or Bob Smith in Calabassas. I can't say for certain about what other dealers charge. But I found the service department in Van Nuys to be pretty helpful. Anyway, 210 for an oil change is tomfoolery, simply on principle. It's the same time, materials, and labor that goes into any other car, why should it cost 3-4 times as much? Because they got you believing that you have some rare Faberge egg.

gatoman39, great write up and pics! Do you know how to turn off the automatic teleservice requests, as these can be annoying if you change your own oil. Also, when you change the oil by yourself, does the idrive recognize the fact that an oil change was performed and resets itself, or how do I reset the interval? Thanks!

Gatoman39, I found something that might work, do you want to try this? Or at least see if you can get into the reset menu's? I have an X6 ordered with the N55 engine, so I figure the idrive system and resets should be the same.

Changed my oil yesterday at 1300 miles. Hadn't changed oil in 20 years, and without this detailed write-up, I would not have attempted it. Thanks very much for the step-by-step guide with photos. Some comments from my experience:
I noticed plug washer I pulled off seems to be aluminum instead of copper that I put back on. Fooled me for second since I was expecting a copper washer and the aluminum washer - which blended in with the engine bottom - was still stuck after oil drain and had to be removed with the help of a screwdriver. The draining was a little messier than I anticipated with the bottom plug. I thought I'd lower the car only after awhile when it started to drip. But, as the oil draining slows down, it starts to adhere to the bottom of the engine and starts going toward the back of the car and then drips onto the bottom cover shield making a mess. It took some time to clean out. I should have lowered it right away after draining started to keep it dripping straight down as it slowed. The most important step - after the jack stand safety backup - is the adult beverage at end. Need to think about some tangible short term reward for yourself. Up here in N. Calif., it tends to be a good glass of wine. Cheers!
