Snows + wheels? A two parts dilemma.
I suspect that this topic thread has been discussed many times before. My small contribution, in return for a spirited debate/feedback are a few images for your consideration.
Expecting my week 45 F10/535ix Msport to arrive at the end of December or so, snows will be fitted almost immediately (the 'all seasons' are good for nothing in a real storm or when going up north). Dilemma #1 The impact wheels have on a car's look is important to me. Even during the long Canadian winter. So I'm still debating whether to 'dress' the lovely 19" 351m with 19" snows (probably none RFTs) - just as I successfully did in the past with my Audi S4 and Infinity M45 (this despite dire prediction about 'bid' and side wall collapse). Or: Should I bite the bullet and get a wheels/tire package. I'd love to hear your experience. Strong opinions one way or another are welcome (I plan to keep this car for about 3 years and I do around 15-18k a year). Dilemma #2 In the meantime, I started looking around for wheel/tire packages. A dealership here in Toronto (thanks bobblehead for the info!) is offering a package for around $3600 (18" Style 281 + Dunlops D3 RFTs). The other one I sourced online is with TireRack (18" Rial Como + Dunlops D3 RFTs) and they'll be around $2600 - TPS included, all in (at my door). Pretty substantial difference. I must say that for me, both are a compromise (from a look point of view). And I have my own preference. But your feedback will be useful here as well. (I used a Dark Graphite image lifted from the BMW car "builder" - and tried to compensate for the reduced wheel size - but my Pshop skills are limited - so be gentle!) Thanks in advance for your feedback! |

These are economic value questions. It all boils down to how much you want to pay for the look you like. It's not clear that there's a major performance difference. For my 535i I went with the BMW snow tire and wheel package for $495 per wheel. They are Dunlop Winter Sport 3D and style 17" 327. Tires are good and the rims are decent but not as nice as my summer 331s. I went with the lowest cost OEM route for winter.

My $0.02 worth, I'd go for the Rial Como wheels, I'd think the thicker "pillars" would hold up better on rough roads due to snow and pot holes during the winter.

Hey Salter,
I read a blogger in Chicago just picked up the same set (18" Style 281 w/Dunlop 3D ROF) from a US BMW dealership for $2500 US. If you have the time, check out Tischer BMW http://www.trademotion.com/pages/ind...2&pageid=10870 for a quote. I believe the shipping is around $300US flat to Canada. I just bought my 2011 535i. They have the winter tires with rims at the dealer I for about 1850 + 350 to store them and change them 2 times a year.
I live in the burbs of chicago Iam still debating if i need them.also they are 17 inch tires not the 18s i have on there now |

FWIW - My snows came in and I had them put on this weekend (a couple of weeks early). As I mentioned above, I went with the $495 per wheel BMW package that includes Dunlop Winter Sport 3D RFT and style 17" 327 rims. They look decent in the metal and the ride is fine. A little less sharp in handling but very quiet on the road.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback. Hoss NY's example looks like it can work. I saw it on a 7 series the other day and it looks decent.
I did get a quote here in Toronto from a shop called Simply Tire for a wheels/tires combo that seems to be reasonable. It ranges from $1650.00 (for the 18" VMRs + Cooper Arctic Claw) all the way up to $2370.00 (for the 18" VMRs + Dunlop Winter 3D). This includes installation but no taxes (HST here in Ontario). Tire profile: 225-40-18. I also received a reasonable quote for the 19" Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 245/40R19 (just below $1200 all in) which I'm considering for mounting on the car's original wheel set. I calculated that for the length of time I'll be keeping the car, the total cost for purchasing and then swapping them twice a year (through my BMW dealership which charges a premium) will amount to a an average wheel/tire combo that I can live with. I like this options purely for maintaining the car's great looks - even during the winter. I'll make up my mind soon. |

Hey Salter,
The VMR route was my original intent, but none of the vendors (Tires23/VMR main office/Nextmod/Bimmian) can guarantee the fitment clearance for the front brake calipers as they have never test fitted the VMR wheels onto a F10 (535 & 550). Just be careful if you do end up selecting VMR wheels. That's why I have to go back to the stock offering to avoid problems. |

In the Toronto area, Tiremag in Concord (Keele north of HWY 7) has great service and prices. I just put my winter package on today, 18X8 M6 replica wheels with Dunlop Winter Sport 3D runflats (245-45-18). The package was less than $2500.00 tax in. It doesn't look quite as good as the 19" wheels and tires the car comes with, but not bad for winter. Also the bead of the tires protrude out from the rim of these wheels a good amount so that will help minimize any accidental curb rash.

Same spec @ gofortires.com (Markham) for $2400 (all in).
btw, I did not have a good experience @ Tiremag. Some young kid (tire installer) chipped 2 of my OEM stock rims. I only noticed them after next season's changeover. |

Did you purchase the TPA for each wheel at the dealeship?
I am looking at buying. VRM set of winter wheels and rims. Do I need to buy the tire pressure sensors for each tire?
