The OP probably has more to worry about in NYC than I do in the bucolic bowels of the deep South, but I'd suggest that he take a chill pill. Seriously, if someone wants to steal your car, they are going to take. The best solution is to make sure that your insurance is current and try to enjoy life without obsessing about things you can't change.

As a New Yorker, I am immune to surprises. In NYC, if you leave a coin inside the car that's visible, they will break window glass to get it. This phenomenon occurs independent of quality of neighborhood. But, if stealing can be prevented by carrying fob in ?some metal case etc. , it would prevent me from riding dirty cabs for a few weeks after the car is "gone"
