iPhone 4 snap-in cradle
I'm impatiently waiting for the iPhone 4 cradle to become available (to take advantage of the video-out capability of the iPhone 4) Evidently, according to various car forums, the initial cradles had problems with over-heating and are now unavailable until the summer.
I was curious, so I emailed BMW to inquire about the expected availability. Here is their response: Thank you for your interest in BMW parts and accessories. At this point there is no additional information regarding that part. Well, that was helpful...

So, what all does it allow you to do? Is it only useful to port the iphone's iPod interface to your BMW screen, or does it let you use other apps on your iphone?

Iphone 4 Cradle
Please note, the actual part and instructions state it is for the iPhone 3G/GS, however the Parts rep called BMW and that is the correct one for the iPhone 4 also (it fits correctly).
You will need to download the "BMW Connected" App from AppStore. The interface once plugged in is really cool. Obviously it shows the album covers of all your music that is on the iPhone, etc... You can stream Web Radio (really cool - I got my old NY stations), Facebook and Twitter are also available. The cradle charges your phone also. Also, when you disconnect the app will show you the Fuel level (gallons), Range and Total distance when you first open the app (pretty cool if you forget how much fuel you have left). My car was a March build - I actually waited until the "Apps" were available as I am pretty certain it will expand to many other cool things in the future. Good luck!! |

What you are describing is already available with the regular Apple cable.
Do you have iPod interface (PlugIn) and VideoOut? Quote:

Iphone 4 Cradle
X-fibre: Just to clarify - This adapter is for vehicles equipped with the Smart Phone Integration or BMW Apps factory options. For vehicles with Smart Phone Integration, this adapter not only charges the phone, but allows access to any music or MP3 files stored on the phone. In addition, it provides a connection to the roof mounted telephone antenna on your car for improved cellular reception. For vehicles with BMW Apps, this adapter is required to fully utilize the option. In addition to the great features noted for Smart Phone integration, it allows you to use the PlugIn as well as the Video Playback features.
It is not the same as the IPOD out. |

Apple "iPod Out" = BMW "PlugIn". Requires the Media cradle and 6NR.
"iPod Out" is actually code in the iOS4 iPhone operating system which provides access to the iPod interface to developers to allow display and control of the iPod interface, which can then be modified in later version without requiring BMW to change anything.

Maybe not pointless... Basically $100.00 gamble if you are post September 2010 production (i.e. have the combox) that a software update will be available in the future (so, yes, pretty much pointless at this point anyway).
I picked one up today and it works the same as USB or the $100.0 cheaper snap-in adapter made for pre March production cars on my December production 550i. Now hoping a software update will be available soon and give me full functionality (mainly video is what I am interested in). The iPhone does seem to get warm, but that could just be because it is charging. Oh and the signal does seem to get better (e.g. 2 bars out of the cradle and 3 in the cradle). I will probably not use it much unless I can get full functionality. So it is more like a $250.00 gamble for me, but I am sure I can sell it for a couple hundred making it more like a $50.00 gamble (see how easy I can justify tossing almost $300.00 out the window on something I'll most likely never use, LOL)... Or I'll just return it and complain that the phone gets hot. Only thing is I feel bad about snagging up the last one that someone could use much more than I. So if your in NorCal, have 6NR, have to have it now and the local dealers all run out in the near future, shoot me a PM. -edit- Actually (now that I have Googled it); it appears you can already get 6NR software upgrade from third party and even the combox retrofit is apparently available from third party. So it seems the media adaptor cradle is worth it (even pre September build) and if it is already possible through third party to update the software, I am hopeful BMW will at least offer a software upgrade in the near future (otherwise I'll just go third party for it)... I got mine today.
Dealer bought it for me with a 30% discount, so it came up to about $212. iPod interface is really good, but I can't figure out how to play video. Any ideas? http://f10.5post.com/forums/attachme...1&d=1303772586 |

Greetings from Munich Habsinger - edit - No info regarding costs, but I guess it will be ~ 200€. In addition you will have to buy the NEW media cradle. I have the first edition of the media snap in, which heats up pretty fast. I will ask BMW for a change once the new model will be available. Last edited by HabsingeR; 04-27-2011 at 04:33 PM.. |

Right,
for me it was also good news after missing 6NR with my 12/2010 535d F10 M Sport (oyster, sapphire black) and reading here in the forum that it won't be retrofitable. But I couldn't believe that and contacted the plant directly via my salesrep. Then he forwarded their email response to me which included a screenshot of the internal order with planned release date for the retrofit. Let's hope BMW will deliver now on time. Cheers Habsinger |
