Full LCD Gauges Coming to Facelift 5-series and 7-series
BIMMERPOST NEWS Full LCD Gauges Coming to Facelift 5-series and 7-series Damon Lavrinc at Autoblog brings news about full customizable LCD gauge displays coming to the "refreshed" 5-series and 7-series, which we take to mean the facelift / LCI versions of the current models - supposedly within 2 years time. It appears that BMW's two largest sedans will transition from black panel displays to full digital LCD displays where the tachometer, speedometer, fuel meter, and temperature gauge will all take a digital form. The display may also be customized to display navigation and infotainment info and take on different looks appropriate for the car being in sport or comfort mode. We'll lament the extinction of the physical needle and gauges in the F10 and F01, but we suspected that it was only a matter of time before full LCD gauges worked their way into BMW's top sedan models. Although full LCD gauges look cool, I prefer the needle gauges. The digital gauges look a little gimmicky.

Sweet! Just in time when I turn in my 2 year lease.
Might have to stick with the F10 if enough goodies like this come out!

The range rover already has this so this is not very surprising.

I fail to see how this is progress unless you can choose between a couple different display "themes". If not, then I'm really skeptical this is a good idea. Only a cost-cutting move.

wouldn't the LCD displays be very expensive? Seems that needles would be much cheaper to me

I'll bet once Mini gets this handed down that they'll have a way to upload in image from your iPhone for a custom background.
I'm going to miss those needles.

My suspicion is that it will be cheaper. Mechanical gauge still have physical linkage. While digital gauge can do without any of them. All parameters are being measured anyway by the computer - hence I see it is a cost saving.

i dunno. with the LFA it was cool because the tach physically couldn't keep up with the engine....if that was even true. but come on bmw, what's next? no steering wheel?

You mean your F10 will be the one people will want when they stop making these. I had the LCD gauges on a previous Benz, and I hated them. You get used to them and they function the same, but it left me feeling cold. There's already way too much technology built into these things already. I want to feel like I'm driving, not sitting at home in front on my computer.

I would imagine it would be cheaper in the long run as every car can be equipped with the same panel - no matter the country. Flipping between kilometers and miles, english / french / german / spanish / russian / chinese (enough already), etc. would be a simple parameter.
