Dang man, so sorry to hear that. Either they didn’t prime the oil system or they dropped something and blocked an oil passage.

I’m about to do my OFHG and I cringe every time I read another one of these.

My problem with the recommendation is this: If the problem is insufficient oil pump speed and pressure during idle - why is the speed and pressure SUFFICIENT at starter speed? That just doesn't make sense. If the issue was loss of prime - sure. If the issue is oil cooler air bubble, cranking on the starter isn't going to help.

The N55 has an electronically controlled variable-displacement oil pump. I've seen no indication in my documentation that extra volume/pressure is called for during start that is not called for during idle.

Because of the high amount of electronic control, I would expect a specific ISTA+ oil priming procedure. Time to do some more research.

I'd also love some iron clad information that if you don't have the external oil/air cooler you aren't at risk (since I don't have one )

Do either of you have a link to the PSA/necessary info we need to know when doing the OFHG replacement so that we don't fall victim to this?

thanks gents! it's a shit place to be right now

no idea if they primed it before starting but the workshop is reputable. many decent cars go through there and the owner drives an e91 himself so dont know wtf happened..

hope to find a resolution and/or replacement soon.

will keep you posted.

S63 would drop straight in ey? hahaha

IMHO they should be on the hook for a new or rebuilt engine.

This. Though I do all my own major repair/maintenance, I take my car to the dealer for oil changes for a few reasons. The last time I went, they noted my leaking OFHG (quoted at $800 lol) and I know for sure that my estimate had the SIB number for the “priming” listed on it. I’ll go out to my car in the morning and grab that, because afaik that has never been posted yet.

I just replaced my entire OFH and did an oil change after the job was done and did the SIB priming procedure.

After replacing the engine or making engine repairs that require the replacement or removal of the engine bearings, VANOS gears, camshafts, bed plate resealing, engine oil pump, engine oil filter housing, cylinder head, engine oil cooler or anything that interrupts the engine oil supply circuit of the engine requires a short oil pump and oil supply circuit priming procedure."

This procedure is used when the high pressure fuel system pressure is not depleted after minor engine repairs and the fuel injection system needs to be disabled by removing the fuel injector electrical connectors.

1- If the engine has been drained prior to the repair remove the engine oil drain plug again to remove any residual oil that may have settled in the engine oil pan during the repair if the engine oil pan was not removed entirely.

2- Reinstall and torque the engine oil drain plug (with a new seal ring) per the applicable repair instruction.

3- Remove the oil filter housing cover and verify the oil filter is present. Reinstall the oil filter housing cover and torque it to the proper specification noted in the applicable repair instruction.

4- Fill the engine with the proper type and amount of engine oil, as specified in the applicable repair instruction.

5- Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.

6- Remove all fuel injector electrical connectors to disable fuel injection.

7- Crank the engine for 10 seconds.

8- After 10 seconds have elapsed, stop the starter, and allow the starter to cool for 20 seconds.

9- Repeat steps 7 and 8 two additional times.

10- Reinstall the fuel injector electrical connectors, reassemble the vehicle and verify proper engine operation.

11- After the engine has reached operating temperature, check the engine oil electronically or with the dipstick, and top up the engine oil as needed.

Just under 100k km so not sure how many miles (sorry I'm in Aus)

Yeah I believe they will cover it all since it was in their care the whole time. Plus they were working on the motor and the motor is now dead. Looking to secure a replacement soon hopefully.

Not sure in what thread my posts on this issue have found themselves, but I'm curious what options your car has. Does it have the external oil cooler behind the bumper? (two extra lines run from the OFH across the top and down to the lower right side of the bumper, if I recall correctly). Does it have the "hot climate option" where there is an oil/coolant heat exchanger at the OFH? Or neither?

Working on a theory....

Oh - and is it a 2011?

The bulletin referenced on my estimate is SIB 09 11 15.

Finding the actual updated document (as it updated since 2009 in 2015 and 2016) is a different story. I've found posts where people have typed out what the bulletin says, but I'd like to find the actual document.

Sorry dude, I have no idea. Car is at the workshop waiting for the new(used) engine.

It's a 2010 (VIN: C300045)

such a common issue with the N55 for the OFHG you would think BMW would go ahead and change these out at no cost

Can someone explain to me (in layman's terms cos I'm not that bright), how/if "OFHG" is connected/related to a leaking oil cooler and a leaking rocker cover?

It doesn't relate to leaks, it relates to spun rod bearings.
