I stand corrected. On the days of the e46 you had to buy an "in motion" dongle to get the TV to work.
Even if it can be coded it's a stupid thing to do, it would be impossible not to be distracted even if it's "for the passengers".

I agree with you guys on the DVD in motion being distracting - but I have another question.
Can you browse BMW online while driving? I mean the news, weather, google search, rss feed etc. My car is not coded but I can do this while driving. Our X5 and my old E92 did not allow this.

Yes, but the screen displays a caveat which you have to acknowledge before accessing any info - just press and you're on-line. However, it's extremely slow and, as others have commented, just like I imagine TV in motion would be - somewhat distracting, hence the prior warning from BMW.

What apparatus does one need in order to be able to do this? Do you need a full autologic setup or something more affordable?

1. A OBD II - Ethernet connector cable (about Ł10 to make) 2. E-Sys software - available on the forums (free) 3. Lots of reading (mainly forums posts and articles already written by members) 4. Patience and the will/ courage to try out the software OK.. 4 things

Interesting. When you say OBD II - Ethernet cable do you mean USB or is it actually ethernet? If it is, there must be some sort of adapter necessary(?)
Do you have a link to the E-Sys software and / or cable details? And do you mean research on this forum or is there a more specific "coding" forum somewhere? Thanks.

That's great, thanks. It seems though that the software links have been removed "due to recent developments", whatever they are....

I managed to download E-Sys 3.18.4 win PIN (46.3 PSDZdata) a while back and bought the components to make up a cable. I only got round to trying it a week ago and all went smoothly.
I got the Auto-high beam on automatically, I got the digital speed in the info display and I tried the DVD in motion code - just to see if it worked - which it did. The only thing that did not work was the power/torque meters when in sport mode. Not sure why they would not enable for me. May be because my SW version is too old on a Oct10 build car. There is a fair amount of manual labour involved in getting the whole thing installed but once done, the package is easy to use. Last edited by 330cdsport; 09-11-2012 at 11:49 AM.. |

Yes its about 16Gb alright but takes over 30Gb of space to install since you have to duplicate one of the large folders - which is strange.
If you want to send me a SAE with a 16Gb USB stick/sd card/etc, I will put the files on it and send it back to you - no probs.

Thanks. I've got a 32Gb stick around somewhere. I could send it to you complete with the European 2013 maps. If I can find it among all my junk.....

can't find the link to hand but if you google it, you'll find one already built. I keep meaning to get one and I also need to get a new laptop as my netbook only has a 15gb drive which is not going to work...
I've done a quick google for OBDII RJ45 cable and found some That what I'd as I don't have tools or the skills to make one up! |
