car companies in gernal.....bmw, ford, hyundai, audi all of them are out of control with their pricing.....I mean an audi a4 2.0T costs 45k with any worth while options, ford explorer with it's cheap ass plastics cost 40-45k, hyundai wants 30k for a sedan....now a 4 banger 5 series for 50k add a couple options ends up north of 55k......I'm not sure if car companies are paying attention but there's a global ressesion looming.....I hope they all go under and nobody bails their asses out again....let them rot next time. Maybe cars, like homes will correct in value....enough ranting but it pisses me off....

I thought for sure BMW would start adding electric motors to supplement their i6 before moving to a 4.
From no turbo to all turbo in the matter of five years, bring on the class action lawsuits and engage those high pressure fuel pumps, if you can. |

Oh, and go look at BMW's sales before you try to criticize their pricing, their cars are selling like hotcakes. As for my take, we bought an F10 528i last year before it was announced that this year's model would have the N20, I can definitely say I would have preferred a more powerful and more efficient 4 cylinder turbo. The six is undeniably smooth and is a great engine as you would expect a straight six from BMW to be, but in such a heavy car you almost never get to revel in its sweetness (I used to have an E90 with the N52 in it and that was a lot more fun) so in a car meant for comfortable cruising, I really don't care about going to a turbo four. |

well they did start out with 4s. so you could say they are just going back to their roots. Everyone seems to forget that the E30 M3 was a 4 banger. you wouldnt turn your nose up at that would you?

Whats passion got to do with it?
This is my first post here and I just had to lay out a thought...
I guess we can all agree that people who belong to or simply peruse through forums have a greater curiosity or passion for cars than the "average" person. This is a good thing for the car companies. Unfortunately for the same car companies is that not enough people share this interest to be able to pay the bills and keep people employed. When we see a car like the 528i w/ a four cylinder, we should know that it serves a purpose in the well being of the company in that it will increase sales and revenue, and allow for more resources to develop cars that we truly love, i.e. 'M' products. Yes some people shop for the label and probably don't know anything about the car, however it is their $ that allows for the vehicles that most of us in here want. Although I'm a BMW fan...I can't say that everything they sell appeal to me, however it only takes that one car that'll keep me coming back...the rest can and will find their place in other people's hearts, minds or wallets. As far as pricing goes...this is a different era we are living in and it seems to accelerate (no pun intended) to another level much faster than it did in the past. In order for auto companies to keep up they are investing more money and innovating far faster than what was done even as little as a decade ago. They are also trying to appeal to a much larger audience because the competition has become pretty aggressive. It seems that everyone auto company is after each others lunch and dinner. So with everything else that is going on in the world today including rising cost of materials, cost of fuel, etc., I don't think its that hard to justify certain price increases. |

I like everything about the engine, but the 2.1k price hike is a bit ridiculous.
I can't help but think that BMW is starting to push the boundary of pricing themselves out of a market. I remember the day when a fully loaded non-M 3 series coupe wask 45k. Now it is 70k. |

Seems too optimistic, BMW,just like most other car manufacturers exists for the sole purpose of making profit, the more the better. She is definitely not here just to perfect their M cars if there is no money there. So if she can get away with removing 2 cylinders from the engine and at the same time raising the car price....What will be next in order to maximize their profit? Are we going to see a 4 banger 535 with a turbo + supercharger in the next 1-2 year?

I think it's been well said already.
There are cars for enthusiasts, and there are cars for everyone else. The 535 and the 528 still share a ton of parts, and BMW is still looking at marginal revenue and quantity sold. After all, they are in it for the money. The more cars they sell, 528 or 535, the better off they will be. I don't know at what unit their Marginal Revenue on this model hits zero, but I'm guessing they haven't hit it yet. It's also worth noting that the 528 is still more powerful, and gets more mileage than the previous version, and is probably lighter. These point all reflect a car that is better balanced, and should feel lighter on its feet. While the engine characteristics will no doubt disappoint many, more will see only the better mileage and more power, and that will be good enough. CAFE standards have something to do with turbos as well. With corparate fuel economy standards increasing for car brands, they need to have more cars with high mileage sold to offset the M5, M6, M3 , etc. models and their not so great fuel economy.

The angle of that pic makes the car's hood look like a butt print. I hope there will be a nice aftermarket solution.
