A fellow Irish road driver - Great - This is encouraging as one of the main reasons for investing so much hard earned and heavily taxed income on this car ...is the light running costs!

520d auto f11... 1.1k on the clock
Best return has been 51mpg on a 150 mile round trip speed 65 to 75 mpg. Average is 42mpg with mainly urban 15 minute journeys. Obc overestimates by 1mpg, but the figures quoted are adjusted. Not bad but hoping it will improve... |

Sounds odd to me. I've done 4500 in mine, averaging 52mpg, get just under 700 miles per tank. Do virtually nothing but motorway driving.

Well my 320d 163hp used to average about 37 mpg around town. On a long journey on the motorway I was getting mid 40's maybe 49. Will have to give the 5er a good run see what it returns.
At the moment not good! |

I have a standard 520D and i'm getting around 40ish mpg, but only have around 500miles on the the clock. I'n not going to start complaining as its still not run in yet, but I was getting better MPGs out of my 7year old Volvo tank!

Let's not forget two things here.
1. Engines can take 5k or more miles to get up to efficiency. Some will be more free running than others, initial mpg figures are bound to be different. Also only 'brim to brim' tests will give the true picture, don't rely on the OBC until you have checked it out for accuracy. 2. Weight of the car is pretty high for the smaller 2.0d engine, so the urban figures, for a lot of stop start driving will appear on the poor side. Forget the official comparison part, that doesn't account for the whole story, never has for the last 30-years or more. The latest 'super high' figures may look even worse, against the book figures, when a car has to cope with heavy urban conditions. Different on a gentle drive/cruise, the 520d returns outstanding mpg for such a large car. HighlandPete |

Garage MPG test
BMW took the car back and drove it for the last 2 days.
Car now has 5k miles on it so should be well run in. Has improved slightly but averaging 40.9p mpg combined still well below the 44 Urban only or 52mpg combinedfigures from BMW. If I had my time over I wouldnt have spent 3K extra for the Auto transmission The manual car seems to be giving aroung 50mpg. Thats a big reduction for the Auto. |

520d MT on 18" @630 Miles. Avg 45 mostly suburban driving but have done 3 Gatwick to Heathrow Runs and it was running at 53/55/58mpg for each of them according to the Journey Computer so I am happy that it lives up to its claims. Frankly it is astonishing for such a large car.
Over 95,000 miles on my previous 525d MT I was getting just under 36 compared to the 45 I have now. That is a 25% improvement like for like. In fact the 520d is slightly up on power compared to the 525d (185 vs 177 hp) which makes it all the more impressive. Last edited by FrequentFlyer; 12-16-2010 at 03:29 PM.. |
