But from the pic on your sig, the steering wheel looks pretty shinny. So that is a good start I assume.

You know I haven't done the wheel in awhile, I can definitely do a tape-line demo for ya. They need cleaning every couple of months, but I imagine that varies. I tend to have moist palms.

I just ordered this stuff, how do you like it? how often do you clean/condition your leather? once a year or more often?

i cleaned the leather back in Feb...probably will hit it again sometime in the summer. i think with the Cinnamon color it hides dirt pretty well. but can't say enough about the cleaner and conditioner

As a detailer I can't stress enough on saying this but DO NOT USE MAGIC ERASER's ON LEATHER! You are removing a layer of the leather dye and even texture when using a Mr. Clean magic eraser. It can cause faster drying, deterioration and discoloring on the leather. If you already used the eraser then make sure you have leather conditioner marinate on it for a day or 2. Magic erasers are highly corrosive and only used for kitchens, bathrooms etc.
Always just start with plain filtered water and a microfiber. If your leather is that soiled then move onto using leather cleaners and conditioners. My recommended cleaner and conditioner is swissvax.

For what it's worth - I have seen and read lots of Magic Eraser + leather horror stories.
The leather in these cars is painted with a urethane coating. Lots of steering wheels and seats have failing coatings from sweat, rubbing and general use and the magic eraser takes it right off. Sure it's matte, but it's also had a layer removed. And the catch is that it looks like you're removing tons of dirt and crud - at first - so you think it's working wonders and keep going. Now, I'm not saying that some very careful and/or lucky folks may not have good luck with the Magic Eraser approach, or that every single person who's touched a magic eraser has screwed up their leather, but... Be very sternly warned - reading about using a Magic Eraser on a forum and running out to try it could be catastrophic. Try other stuff first, IMO. I took tons of crud off the factory base wheel of my F10 with a damp, low-pile microfiber cloth. Good as new. I just bought an LCI M-Sport wheel I plan to retrofit. It's got a shiny/blotchy area from the previous owner I'm going to look for some ways to even out. |
