Steering noise
I'm also experiencing this grinding noise while turning at low speeds on my '11 550i M-sport.
I'm taking it to the shop tomorrow. Will see what happens. |

This is starting to be a real big problem. At the other BMW forum, about 44 people already have this grinding steering problem.
Imagine the number of people that do not go to these BMW forums and also have this problem. In fact, two days ago I came across a guy at the BMW service department who brought in his new F10 550i complaining of the grinding steering problem. He does not visit any of these BMW forums that we normally go to.

I too have this problem although intermittant. The severity of the grinding also seems to vary. Sometimes it grinds (accompanied with a vibration) throughout the arc of a slow speed 90 degree turn. Other times, it just occurs in short bursts in the turn. Seems to occur both left and right.
I have a 535i MSport with Dynamic Handling Pkg. Brought it into the dealer and in a ride along, the tech also heard and felt it through the floor. His comments are that it feels hydraulic to him. The tech had not heard of this issue before but mentioned that in Canada, we have alot less cars with DHP. My appointment to bring it in is next week. The tech said he would research this issue. I'm crossing my fingers on this one...... |

My 2011 535i is going in for appt. #2 at the dealer next week for both the right pulling and grinding. My grinding is also varying in severity and volume, but only seems to be on righthand slow turns.
Is it just me or have some of you felt the grinding through the steering wheel in a straight line at speed? I can swear I have.. but not as much as turning |

I have never felt the grinding noise in a straight line. I only hear it at low speeds turning and while turning and hitting a dip in the road. I hear it every time I drive it. It also seems to happen more often right after I crank the car and begin driving.

In germany is an software update available which fix this problem.
It's version 2.40.2 of the suspension software available since last week! Don't know if it's already available in the US or somewhere, but the problem is fixed! |

No fix here!
Sorry guys my 2012 535i M sport is in the shop for the 4th time and the software upgrade did nothing! Grinding noises and vibration... BMW the Ultimate Grinding Machine!.. I spent $70k on my car and have been so patient but I'm starting to lose my cool...oh and by the way my radio presets get deleted every fee days... I paid $70k for that?..., I bought the car and fell in love with it but now after 3 months of this crap I'm almost done...

feel your pain
I also had the grinding noise happen on my 550xi M Sport. I cannot give you the build week but I ordered it on Jan 29, 2011 and I took delivery on 3/17/11. The noise started shortly after that and I drove it a total of 4 days before taking it in. I went through a hydraulic valve flush - no good, followed by the software upgrade - no good, followed by an ARS Hydraulic valve replacement - success. My car was in the shop for one week and BMW reimbursed me for two weeks worth of my monthly financing. The noise has been absent since then and I no longer cringe when turning. It appears there is still no fix and unfortunately everyone on this forum and bimmerfest has had to go through the same process, i.e. BMW makes the repairmen go through a preset list of things to do and check before going right to the software upgrade or valve block change. These are not trivial things and BMW does not want the mechanics just puling the trigger on valve changes without ruling out other potential causes. It is a major PITA, but those are the "BMW hoops" that we must jump through. My advice is to insist that your service managers just start with the valve block change and see what happens. At the same time, I would suggest calling BMW NA and log a complaint and demand financial reimbursement for the amount of time your car is laid up. BMW can't continue to ignore all of us demanding a fix and money back. BTW, since the fix, the car is absolutely amazing!!
