Why are u racing on a public road?
Id imagine those driving 535's are really pissed off in case people mistake them for a lowly 530!

The 535 has separate twin exhaust so it stands out from the 530 and it's not racing, it's accelerating as quickly as possible to the legal speed limit whilst another car does the same beside you.

Hilarious replies but I think we're being a bit harsh on OP. Of course the BS about exclusivity and drag racing makes no sense at all...but:
For me, the "doppelendrohr" i.e. double tailpipe, symbolizes the classic R6. BMW's exhaust policy used to be something like this: single tailpipe -> 4 cylinder double tailpipe -> 6 cylinder quad tailpipe -> M So, for a BMW connoisseur, even a debadged R6 was instantly recognizable. I do think that this is more of a european thing because for most americans, 6 cylinder engines are nothing special. Unlike Europe where 4 cylinder cars account for at least 90% of sales. So I am a bit nostalgic for the fact that BMW dropped their policy, but they probably had to. Even run of the mill Peugeot's, Renaults and Opels nowadays pack 2 tailpipes so BMW had to sex up the 520d.

That will be a good trick as I'm told it sounds like a tractor.

Seriously though, aren't we all more grown up than needing to identify what car we have, by things like the amount of exhaust pipes, or chrome trimming? HighlandPete |

(i) We are interested in having fun. Personally speaking, you could ask my kids, my girlfriend, my friends and my work colleagues. I'm fairly confident that they would quash your theory that I don't like to have fun. Naturally the context of fun to be had, is different in it's core nature, social acceptability, location, position (ha ha, I said position) and time of day. To deny the variance of fun, would make me both weird and probably heading for a long stretch at her majesty's pleasure. But in short, I'd like to re-iterate: 520d owners like to have fun. (ii) In regard to "unwanted attention" - yes it happens, from time to time, but generally speaking, I don't mind people admiring my car. So long as they are not burglars. I think burglars are exclusive to theft from houses, so it's probably car thieves that I really don't want attention from. Last edited by ipso_facto; 05-18-2011 at 09:17 AM.. Reason: typo |

And yes, in the days of the e39 no one would give a damn. But apparently priorities have changed. Just not here on the forum, we're too grown up for that.

Last month, a friend of mine consults to me as which MB she should get with the size around her current C280 with sport package (which was my suggestion too). I told her to wait till end of this year for 2012 E350 coupe due to the new engine and interior enhancements. She didn't want to wait that long and DIDN'T CARE about the engine size. So I suggest her to buy E250 coupe which already has the new engine. Couple "days" went by, she droves E350 due to it has nicer bumper (amg pack) and TAILPIPES!!! which sets her back in more than usd40k difference in price. |

Theres a 2009 e60 545i 4800cc with single sided tailpipes downstairs .. I don't know what the owner was thinking -should have waited a year and for nearly the same price got two sided trapezoid tailpipes. Poor thing destroying the planet and not even getting any eyeballs from car thieves.

Honestly speaking..... Sometimes I do have similar feelings on standing out on a more expensive car....... Only for a second, though. I then realized that I will be standing out in the eyes of either the police for speeding tix, or thieves more
At the end of the day, it is more about enjoyment of the car. For status, I would buy something else where I will be sitting in the back or only has 2 doors......

Well we have all already made the decision by buying a new BMW F10. By doing that we have already chosen to pay 10.000-20.000+ euro more than we would have to compared to a standard car.
In that context the last 3000-8000 euro doesnt really matter, the vast majority of people will be impressed by the brand; a BMW. If that is important to you.
