Change must come for Spa's tone-deaf owners and promoters....

The loss of life and multiple serious shunts at the same location....Hubert's death two years ago today....the recent Spa 24 hr world sports car race shunt a few weeks ago....massive quali shunts this past Friday in the W series....and today's Norris shunt at the same location....

The reality is there is not enough deceleration area before the race car makes contact with an immovable....the runoff areas are abhorrently under designed for today's motorsport culture.

Perhaps the 20 drivers should complete the formation lap tomorrow and grid the cars....and shut them off and step out of the cars in unanimous protest....

Just look at the history of F1 motorsport and see how Sir Jackie Stewart changed F1 motorsport safety:

At Spa-Francorchamps in 1966, Stewart ran off the track while driving at 165 mph (266 km/h) in heavy rain, and crashed into a telephone pole and a shed before coming to rest in a farmer's outbuilding. His steering column pinned his leg, while ruptured fuel tanks emptied their contents into the cockpit. There were no track crews to extricate him, nor were proper tools available. Stewart was rescued by fellow drivers Graham Hill and Bob Bondurant who had also crashed nearby. There were no doctors or medical facilities at the track, and Stewart was put in the bed of a pickup truck, remaining there until an ambulance arrived. He was first taken to the track's first aid centre, where he waited on a stretcher, which was placed on a floor strewn with cigarette ends and other rubbish. Finally, another ambulance crew picked him up, but the ambulance driver got lost driving to a hospital in Liège.[15] Ultimately, a private jet flew Stewart back to the UK for treatment.

After his crash at Spa, Stewart became an outspoken advocate for auto racing safety. Later, he explained, "If I have any legacy to leave the sport I hope it will be seen to be an area of safety because when I arrived in Grand Prix racing so-called precautions and safety measures were diabolical."[16] By Stewart's reckoning, a driver who raced for five years had a two-thirds chance of being killed in a crash.[17]

Stewart campaigned with Louis Stanley (BRM team boss) for improved emergency services and better safety barriers around race tracks. "We were racing at circuits where there were no crash barriers in front of the pits, and fuel was lying about in churns in the pit lane. A car could easily crash into the pits at any time. It was ridiculous."[18] As a stop-gap measure, Stewart hired a private doctor to be at all his races, and taped a spanner to the steering shaft of his BRM in case it would be needed again. Stewart pressed for mandatory seat belt usage and full-face helmets for drivers, which have become unthinkable omissions for modern races. Likewise, he pressed track owners to modernize their tracks, including organizing driver boycotts of races at Spa-Francorchamps in 1969, the Nürburgring in 1970 being joined by his close friend Jochen Rindt, and Zandvoort in 1972 until barriers, run-off areas, fire crews, and medical facilities were improved.

Some drivers and press members believed the safety improvements for which Stewart advocated detracted from the sport, while track owners and race organizers baulked at the extra costs. "I would have been a much more popular World Champion if I had always said what people wanted to hear. I might have been dead, but definitely more popular.", Stewart later said.[19]

Couldn't agree more! I have a very bad feeling about the Eau Rouge/Radillon layout.

Seeing Lando coming to a standstill at almost the identical spot as Hubert, that was frightening. What if this had happened at the beginning of the race..

Part of the problem is that drivers sometimes use that run off area at full throttle. Just look at this insane overtake from Caio Collet in the F3 race today.
They should suspend him for this.

Agreed. They need a run off to the left of Raidillon that at least mirrors the right, and probably a bit more on the left given the trajectory of the corner. Wouldn't make it any less spectacular.

That man is F* crazy !

First he tried it on the left side , there was no room at all...Then he overtook with his right front wheel over the grass !
In these rainy conditions he should get at least one race ban !

Just finished watching & WHAT a qualy, all of those guys have balls of steel!!

Should be a Great Race tomorrow.
Disappointed for George having pole pinched from him at the last moment.
Good for Max taking pole, he will either get away well & go on to win or he will cock it up & he wont. Either way it's probably going to be a Championship decider.
If Lewis goes on to win from third & cleanly gets past Max..well that'll speak for itself, equally if Lewis cocks it up & Max takes the win from pole...exciting stuff.

Norris crash looked terrible, so glad that he was ok & good on Seb for stopping, you gotta love that guy, hope that he has a good race, if there's carnage amongst the top three & he keeps out of it he could have a great result!

Anyways we will all find out tomorrow, unfortunately I won't get to watch until the evening as we are going to have a look at a female Alsatian to be a 'companion' for our Alsatian Frankie.

No worries on that score BP is my only social media vice, don't do any of them, not even a registered mobile as I like to keep my 'digital fingerprint' as small as I can....you never know who's watching or posting

They say that in the rain it's all talent that determines the score and the car is secondairy.
I think RUS proved that today.

I think it's strange that MERC didn't sign RUS for next year. He already showed his talent multiple times now. Clearly he deserves a better car than that underperforming Williams.
Last year no Williams car reached the top 10 and this year only on the Hungaroring because of that freak crash that took out most of the usual favorites.

If MB don't sign RUS it can only be to prevent another Starwars!!!

Give the boy a chance...I'd hate to see his obvious talent wasted another year. I can appreciate MB's loyalty to HAM for all he has done but this is getting ridiculous!
