Coupe means cut in French. Think early 20th century automotive history. It’s referring to the rear roofline or a “cut” wheelbase. A figurative “cut” is included in the design element of a model designated a coupe. It’s a valid moniker in my view.

I think the automotive industry defines a "Coupe" as a 2-door, 2 seat vehicle. Or should at least IMO.

I was thinking about this when I wrote that comment, actually. I have a couple original E30 owner's manuals. The definition of sedan doesn't include any specifics on the number of doors, but coupe does.

In my own experience two door cars have been called coupes, some have B pillars some do not. If cars in the 20s and 30s had four doors and were called coupes I do not recall them, my mistake.

Here is the wikipeida defintion "A coupé or coupe is a passenger car with a sloping or truncated rear roofline and two or three doors (although several four-door cars have also been marketed as coupés)."
