I rebuilt a 2006 E60 in 2007. The BMW dealer did not know it was a salvage and covered it without issue. However, it is not uncommon for them to be notified that the car was salvaged and not honor the warranty. They also remove the VIN from their system so that you are unable to get any software updates. It is basically a roll of the dice.

I have not checked with the stealer but since it was originally at the stealers body shop I am almost certain the warranty is void. When bmw knows a car was salvaged they void the warranty.

I am heading over to the body shop tomorrow to help put the parking sensors and the rear bumper cover on. It has taken forever but I should have the car home tomorrow. I will get some picks asap.

Ok well now here is whats going on in the process. I ordered the bumper covers painted from a bumper shop in Chicago, It wasn't a perfect match to the car but was close. I decided to go ahead and have them repainted by the shop so it is a perfect match. They painted the headlight washer covers, toe hook covers, and the parking sensors. I can see from those that the paint on the bumper covers is a few shades lighter. The body shop is charging me 260 to repaint both bumper covers. I just want this to be done right and an extra 260 bucks so I am happy is worth it. My mistake for having a shop that didn't see the car paint them in the first place. Lesson learned and it will be next week before I get my car home.

Ok well the front is finished with the bumper repainted for a perfect match. The back of the car they straighten it out but I just didn't like the look of it and wanted it to be perfect as well so I ordered the tail panel from a bmw dealer in PA. Those parts along with a new trunk locking mechanism cost me 494.00. The shop will install these for me this week.

Nice job on the 550i rebuild. I am actually in the middle of a similar project on a 2011 550i. Thought I would ask you a question about the front park distance sensors. I likewise had some missing parts when I purchased the car, so it is a bit like solving a jigsaw puzzle. I have the original front bumper wiring harness and have figured out all plugs except for two plugs (one of each side). Each plug has brown and orangish red wires going into them. I have the Park Distance Control option on my car, but do not have the four plugs and wires that connect up to my sensors. Do you know if there is a separate wiring harness that connects the four sensors, and would it plug into the two mystery plugs with the brown and red wires, by any chance?
I also have yellow electrical modules around my hood latch devices on my core support. They have two fine striped wires leading into the yellow plugs (the wires are purple/white and purple/green striped). I purchased a very nice core support from a salvage yard and they cut these wires leading into the plugs. My guess is this is a safety device that warns of a loose hood. I don't have any mating plug wires coming out of the front of my car, so I am not sure how they tie into my car's electrical system. I would love to get a wiring diagram for the 550i, but haven't found anything online. Would appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks, Ken |

Yes there is a seperate harness for the parking sensors. The extra wires on each side are these for the fog lights perhaps? I will look at the wire colors for the fog lights. I dont know about the other wires as my core support wasn't damaged.
Edit The other wires may be to the side view cameras. Also there are wires on each side for the horns. Last edited by bboy1234; 03-07-2013 at 10:38 PM.. |

550i Rebuild Project
Thanks for the comment on the PDC sensors. I'm still trying to sort out a couple of wires. I have two sets of wires (brown wire + green wire) leading to a plug on each side of the front end, adjacent to the frame rail. I was thinking they might be for my horns. The horn components were missing when I purchased the car. Do you know if there are two horns on the 550i (one high pitch and one low pitch)? If so, are they mounted to the right and left of the radiators? I am thinking the brown/green wires are for the horns, since they are located where I assume the missing horns would be installed. One puzzling point is that I turned the power on in my car and these brown&green wires were hot (~6 volts d.c.). I depressed the horn on the steering wheel, and no change in the voltage. I would not think the wires would be hot with simply powering up the car, if these were horn wires. Thought I would take a chance with you to confirm that a.) there are two horns in the 550i, b.) approx. location of the horns c.) color of lead wires to the horns, and d.) purpose of the green/brown wires if they are not for the horns.
Sorry to bother you with my questions, but as you know it is hard to find info. Thanks, Ken |

There are 2 horns. Location as you describe it seems correct for the horns. I do not recall the wire colors. I have checked my photos and was unable to find a picture of the horn wire/plugs.

Just a quick update. I just received my new bumper carrier and now confirmed the location of the horns and the wiring connections to the horns. The two brown/green wires are not for the horns. The horns are fed by red & brown wires. I am still exploring the purpose of the green & brown wire sets. Perhpas they tie into the PDC sensor wiring harness, but not sure.

Just checking in with you on your 550i rebuild. By now I assume that you have your car on the road. I am still working on my rebuild. Have collected most all of the parts and starting the assembly process. I ordered the PDC wiring harness and have the same question you have. My harness has the 4 PDC plugs, but also has an extra 2 pole plug near the center of the PDC harness. Can't see any obvious function in this area of my bumper. Did you ever find a purpose for this plug? I would also be interested to know the sequence of your reassembly. Did you have to replace your radiators? If so, what sequence did you follow? Thanks, Ken

One other question. Did you ever come across any sources for F10 wiring diagrams or other schematics? I have used REALOEM, which has been helpful to find part numbers, but the schematics are too general. I have tried my local BMW dealer where I am buying parts, but they claim they have nothing available.

My car is on the road and everything is great so far no problems what so ever. No I did not have to replace the radiator, Fans or any of that on mine. The extra 2 prong plug on mine was because I ordered the wrong harness for the parking sensors. I went to the BMW body shop and was told those 2 wire plug is related to night vision camera. Since mine and I assume yours doesn't have that option they told me to wire tie it and that was that. My BMW dealer was great at answering any of my questions. Good luck. Did you start a thread of your own with pictures?
