I just got a 2011 550i and my VIN doesn't work either. Never used this in wife's car, but I was wanting to give it a try. Oh well Matt |

A 911 Lifeline for Your Car, No Fees Required
Here is a gadget that I am considering - It can call emergency services and there is no annual fee.
Here is a link to a Wall Street Journal article: http://www.wsj.com/articles/a-911-li...red-1472656682 Here is a link to the manufacturer: https://www.automatic.com/ This may be an option if BMW doesn't step up |

According to my SA the upgrade is gratis so I'm having it done while they fix my right, rear door (my diagnosis is a dead actuator as the lock works mechanically but not electrically). I've read that I have to redo all my coding after the install.... I certainly hope not!!! I'll find out either next Monday or Tuesday.

Sorry, but what upgrade is gratis? And must one be a paying subscriber for it to be so?
I've also heard there's a gift card option if one wants deactivation, but is same only given if one is a current subscriber? Confusing. Last edited by dbs600; 10-28-2016 at 03:05 PM.. |

Yes, there's a $200 pre-paid Visa card or $300 to be used in the BMW store. I went with the combox as I apparently have Assist until 11/17 and I wanted the option of extending it. |

Thank you for this info, but any idea if the Visa card is available to those who's Assist enrollment has already lapsed?

I have a 2011 M3 Sedan. They are updating my communications equipment on Monday the 7th for free. Woo hoo. Plus a loaner. Can't wait. My contract expires 05/05/17. I just renew then.

So, when someone's bimmer is flipped on its lid for 5 days in the brush with the injured hanging by their seat belts, I am sure they will appreciate that $200 gift card instead of a working combox that could have summoned the authorities to their exact position. |

Second, you more than most understand the value of life safety equipment. Can you see our Air Force pilots trading their ejection seat's logic board in for a Starbucks gift card due to a firmware defect? Lol! |

1. BMW should charge a nominal fee for the service annually. 2. If you don't want it, don't pay the nominal fee. 3. Although, as a society, we should insist that people pay the nominal fee since this system can significantly lower health care costs in the end. |

2. If you don't want the service, don't pay for it. 3. Now, here is where I said as a society, we should insist that BMW ASSIST type services should be mandatory. This is just an opinion, so don't get bent out of shape. I swear by these driver assist systems. For example, collision detection is amazing and it's saved my sorry butt more than once. The braking intervention incorporated with the ACC is brilliant. Okay, how, as a society, would having a mandatory BMW assist type service lower health care costs? Answer: The rule of large numbers. Having a large scale deployment of a functional and operational BMW assist system incorporated into every vehicle in the USA would lower healthcare costs without a doubt. 92 people are killed on the roadway each day. Those unfortunate soils probably add little cost to our health care system. But, there are 4.6 million serious injuries in auto accidents over the course of a single year. If every car had a working BMW assist type system, the criticality and associated costs (long term and short term rehab, loss of work, etc.) would be reduced by 20%. Why? Logistics. These BMW assist type systems send out near immediate notification of the crash. In many cases, the occupants can talk to the assist operator to express the nature of the accident. Thus, logistics combined with triage can direct the right resources to the right location---almost immediately. FROM NHTSA PAPER: The National Highway traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) developed software called URGENCY for use with Automatic Crash Notification (ACN) technologies to improve triage, transport, and treatment decision-making. The aim is to identify, instantly and automatically, the approximately 250,000 crashed vehicles with serious injuries occurring each year from the 28,000,000 crashed vehicles with minor or no injuries. Proper implementation of these system will save lives and lower healthcare costs for those critically injured in auto accidents. |
