The M5 is the Ultimate Driving Machine: a few can afford it, the rest will keep talking about bad mpg. Pros: top power, richest options, good toy for ego. Cons: overpriced + high TCO, no AWD, weird DCT, outdated body design.
I would better go for MB E63 AMG S 4Matic. Sorry ![]() Last edited by valbmw; 07-14-2015 at 12:42 AM.. |

That's right, see my first line.
However everything is relative: the new rivals AMG and Audi RS7 are outperforming the old good BMW S63T, and the F10 body is great (probably the best) but unchanged since 2009. So-called LCI was actually a light facelifting, and M5 LCI doesn't exist at all. What makes me a bit relaxed, is MB is still boxy from outside and square inside, and Audi lives forever in the shape of 1998 C5 Avant. Let's see what comes as the BMW "next" G30 in 2016. Hope BMW will finally release a new engine, improve steering and put a decent transmission both auto and manual, not that weird robot. This is my own opinion, no way I insist on being Jeremy Clarkson or so) I would love to see BMW again making the best 4-door performance sedans. |

F10 535i vs F10 M5
The M5 is for M cars a bit boring, but in a way that easy to drive nature lends itself to being a daily. Variable 535i M5 Power 308hp 550hp Power experience with 535i is that it is more than 95% of other cars, gives a good shove in kick down regardless of which driving mode its in. M5 experience is smooth and relentless. I purposely found myself doing 80 into a 30 with an ex-cop riding shotgun. However, there's always something faster at a regional meet. Tranny 8-sp ZF auto 7-sp DCT The ZF is already a polished product and so adaptable that the experience is very different in eco-pro to Sport and both have their advantages - Driving grandma - eco pro requires more pedal travel and smooths out acceleration to limo-like levels of gentility. Sport makes the car feel alive. DCT is a much more engaging delivery. It works just fine in D but using the paddles is more satisfying. Just leave it in self-protection mode and it is very engaging. Steering Electric with RWS Hydraulic front wheels only This is the real differentiator for me - the steering feel. The RWS on the 535i is a bit discombobulating - reduced turning circle may be of little importance to US drivers, but a boon to Euro city dwellers. However, it takes some getting used to. (I fear the elk test in my 535i but my much older e66 760Li inspired confidence.) The M5's steering is 'M-like' and much more suited to the open road or the odd track day experience. No elk fear here. Suspension I can't speak for the competition but I think the suppleness is greater in the M5 than the 535i. It was the same with the e61 550i and the e61 M5 - the M car holds the road better and the production car is simply harsher. Luxuries - a production BMW is crap without extras and whilst some people will have spec'd everything, the M5 comes with most things. So, to get the features you want in a 535i you either have to get lucky or VIN check every car to avoid a wasted journey. The list to make you car might be quite long....... Adaptive headlights Comfort seats or at the very least lumbar adjust DAB (a rare option) Indeed the base audio is no good but the top of the line nothing special - according to my wife a concert pianist. Comfort access Soft close Power trunk Head up display 6WA digital dash Rear sun blinds and on and on........ |
