That roof looks very worrying. It would be great to get clarification on what actually happened and hopefully occupants walked away.

It still has the tie down bolt in the front bumper which seems odd. With a license plate we assume it was driven...but with the tie down bolt (or whatever it's called) still attached...that suggests that it hadn't been fully prepped yet. Although I suppose it could have been inserted to transport it in it's damaged state. I just don't think a tow company would have done that.
As well it's bizarre to have that kind of damage where the front passenger wheel is still relatively intact and just the front quarter has been sheered off. |

Im not buying it because:
1- Why in the world would you cut the entire top instead of cutting the door? It looks that the damage is on the front left side of the vehicle and door both pillars looks to me that they are pretty good. See the top edges of 4 doors. they are almost intact. 2- If the driver was unconscious or with a broken back, seems to me that will be way much easier and fast to cut driver door than the entire roof. I've seen those type of rescue efforts many times. 3- Just imagine how thick and strong are those top pillars that keep the car together so imagine the rescue team going through that work. Can't say what happened here but for sure is something very, very unusual. |

The roof must have been cut off, I know In France firefighters don't take any risks of hurting the occupants of the car and choose to cut the roof off most of the time even if it doesn't seem needed

They cut the roof off. They snip the A and B pillars and bend the roof back to remove the occupants afterwards they fold it back onto the car so the wreck can be transported on a flatbed. Obviously without the support of the A and B pillars the roof is going to collapse under its own weight. The C pillars are not going to support the thing like a cantilever. Especially since their integrity is compromised from the backward bending of the roof during the rescue.
The reason the doors are in perfect condition is because all the cutting is done with the doors as wide open as possible. The window frames dont need to be touched to remove the roof. Its absurd to think a roof with 6 points of support would collapse like that especially without a scratch in the paint. The amount of force required to collapse that roof would certainly warp the metal of the roof itself. |

If you look carefully you can see the C pillar is mangled, indicating it was snipped to make the peeling of the roof easier. Atleast thats what I see above the rear quarter panel, that doesnt look like the natural line of the car and its not damage from this accident.
its even possible they snipped the C pillar entirely and just placed the roof on top of the car. What do you expect them to do with the roof? Bring in a separate flatbed for transport and lay it on the side next to the car at the wrecking yard? |

From the perspective of a paramedic it does not make much sense to cut a roof open if the doors open. Extricating through the roof is actually tougher then from the side. Having said that the French have a very different way of doing fire and EMS. I suspect there is more to the story than meets the eye.

Well... I've seen E39s crash on the race track, and even when turtled those roofs held up very well. E36 - not so much. Also, if the roof had indeed collapsed as some have speculated, then the door frames would have bent as well. I concur that the roof was cut off.
I totalled my E39 M5 by running it into an SUV at speed. It is remarkable how well these cars protect the occupants. Just like in the crash videos, the entire front of the car takes the abuse and the passenger compartment is left relatively intact. In my case, all four doors still opened, the nav system told me where I was (long & lat) flashers came on, etc. Very cool. Destroying my beautiful car, not so cool. And it wasn't my fault, so that was good.
