My '11 550 went in for a service - I got a '12 528 loaner with this feature - totally tripped me, but I suppose this will become the norm shortly. I always felt a feeling of relief when the car did start again...

This is insane. I cannot believe they put this feature to be ON by default when you start the car. My car is manual and every time I look down I get confused and think I stalled. EVERY feature on a car should default to the previous setting. I bought the damn car and I want to determine which settings I want. I don't want the car doing that for me.

A journalist friend of mine said that the 2012 911 they drove at the world launch here in South Africa kept defaulting to on, just like the BMW system. They kept having to press the deactivation button after each start Maybe they were not informed properly hoe to permanently turn it off ? Porsches ad for it

Learn Why Auto Start/Stop defaults to ON
The reason BMW designed its Auto Start/Stop function to be in the default ON position every time you start your car, is because BMW engineers are having a hard time implementing designs that satisfy their customers. You can visit this site to to find out why. bmwautostop dot com

I have a 2011 550i 6MT, and experienced Auto Stop/Start on a 2012 528i dealer loaner. Didn't like it too much, and was able to experiment on defeating it.
I'm surprised no one else commented: I found that if I moved the shifter to the left to select manual shift mode, then Auto Stop is defeated, even if you don't rock up or down to shift. I then found the gearbox would not select 8th gear on the highway, so I started driving the car in manual mode while in stop go, shifting back to full auto on the highway, and then back to manual mode for normal roads. Since I'm used to MT, it didn't seem too much to use the shifter to defeat Auto Stop, even though pressing the button on the dash works with less user interaction. |

im looking into purchasing a 2012 535i actually and i was curious on a few things on this topic.
1) If the car is in drive and auto start/stop is activated (engine shuts off with foot on brake), what happens when you activate the electronic e-brake and let foot off brake? 2) If the car is in drive and auto start/stop is activated (engine shuts off with foot on brake), what happens when you open the door? reason why I ask is just a concern if its possible that a driver can forget the auto start/stop feature shut off the car instead of the driver, and possibly start up again with the driver out the car. Can this potentially cause accidents? |

Just have this coded to be turned off permanently. There are a bunch of DIY or local chaps that could help you accomplish this. Search the Coding section on this forum...
This will be one of the first things I'll have done to my F10 when i get it. Alan

2) Are you planning to put the car in Park before you open the door and exit the vehicle? If yes to both, then you are ok and the car will stay shut off. However, if the answer is no, then I have not tried these scenarios (and have no reason to) |

Without this feature the CO2 emissions would be much higher. That means UK company car tax - BMW's seconds largest market - would be unduly effected and they'd sell less.
When you press the start button - press the off for auto start/stop at the same time. |

Just shift to manual or turn off the button when you start and it will not stop. Real simple.
