Well that's it, your only going to need a thin walled bmw plug socket, ratchet, extension and a flat blad screw driver. It took me 2 hours because I had to go buy a socket to grind down and the 30mins to grind it to fit in the head.

[QUOTE=Teddylongtooth;18672956]Ok guys, I did my plugs and had my car at the dealer for the fuel pump recall within the last 2 weeks. I first had the HPFP replaced under the recall, my SA said my car probably didn't need it and Im only maybe preventing a problem in the future. Well he was wrong, my car had a rough idle which bugged the crap out of me and my car had a crazy harmonic vibration under a long hard acceleration. I'm happy to report the vibration under acceleration is gone after the fuel pump replacement and it only slightly helped with the rough idle. This past Saturday my plugs showed up early and I put them in and my rough idle is gone, my car has 56k and the plugs had never been changed. So if your car falls under the HPFP recall get it to the dealer and get it done, even if your car runs good you may not know you have a problem till its replaced. I bought my car used and thought it was a worn drive shaft dampner causing the vibration and I thought it was injectors causing the rough idle, I was wrong on both. This may not be the case for everybodys car but it was only $76.66 for the plugs and the fuel pump was free and a little bit of my time for both, if your car has a rough idle this is where I would start.[/QUOTE

I did my change earlier today. The previous instructions made it a breeze. Somebody said at one point you need a 15 mm socket; as several others said, though, it is a 14 mm.
Two things I'd like to add for anybody about to do this job: First, my coils needed cleaning on the insides pretty badly, where the metal contact the the plug is made. Damp Q-tips worked very well for this. Here is a before and after pic And second, this tool makes grabbing the plugs out of the engine a breeze. I would highly recommend getting one of these, which has a claw on the end, or a magnetic one will work too. Last edited by UA_civ_eng; 10-15-2015 at 01:13 PM.. |

My slight rough idle is back and the harmonic vibration during long hard excelebration is also back and maybe never left. I did some research on the n63 engine and it appears that 2 cylinders on the same bank fire consecutively which some say is the cause for the slight rough idle.
This is the firing order 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2 This is the how the cylinders are laid out (nevermind the m5 manifolds) the cylinder numbers are the same. If you follow the firing order cylinders 8 & 6 fire consecutive and then 2&1 at the end of the firing cycle which are on the same side of the engine. Most engines criss cross back and forth and don't fire 2 cylinders on the same side consecutively. This is probably what I'm feeling as a slight rough idle, the car runs good and has lots of power so I don't believe anything is wrong. This is probably how the engine is supposed to feel, I'm not saying any of your rough idle problems are the same as mine, you may have a real problem, I never had any check engine lights or what would be called a miss fire or a lack of power. If you replaced all your plugs, ignition coils, fuel pumps and you still have a slight rough idle with no check engine lights this is most likely what your experiencing. Only have 15,000 miles on mine but since I just did a Intake and Intercooler install, why not replace the plugs? www.rockauto.com has them for just over $8.00 a piece for Bosch ZR5TPP33 and shipping is like $6.00. So 70-80 bucks for 8 of them.
Dont be afraid on putting in plugs yourself. BMW cars are one of the easiest cars I have ever worked upon. Did all my own work on my 328xi and doing all my own work on my 550xi Msport. Will do a little DIY for those who are a bit nervous. Takes less than an hour to do and 80 bucks plus and hour is a bit better that 500 at dealer. I need to locate the torque on these plugs. Yes, you just "feel" it, but the easy access to plugs should due them justice to torque to specs. Current coupon code Oct 2015 of 3690459B490384 takes another 5% off so shipping is almost free. ...Mike |

Finally got around to installing the plugs after they been sitting on my desk. My car is currently at 42k miles.
I forgot to take photos of the plugs (I will tomorrow) But they werent that bad, I cant remember but I know one side was replaced with the injectors around 17k ish miles, and the other side might have been replaced as well during the CCP at around 25k ish. But now all are new and dont have to worry about them for a while, probably wont touch them again until 75k miles. Very simple to do, the guide on pg. 3 helped me a bit, first side took me about 1 hour, then the second side took me like 20 minutes.
