Only done 1500 miles, initial running in period was giving me 48mpg, now I'm using the revs a bit more (keep it mainly in sports auto) I'm getting just over 45mpg.

Not yet. It looks like the 530d may come with xDrive when the new engine appears later in 2011. Though we don't really need xDrive in the UK to be honest - we've had bad weather for a couple of winters, but usually we wouldn't need it, nor would we want the increased fuel consumption with our pump prices! Added to that when you have summer performance tyres, and hardly anyone switches to winter tyres, xDrive isn't going to work miracles!
A few European markets offer xDrive especially in counties who get lots of snow and ice.

I was speaking with the dealer up in Inverness, they are so pleased the new F30 3-series will have RHD xDrive versions, as that is the car in great demand. Sure some go for the X1, X3, X5, but not always out of choice, folks want cars with AWD. BMW lose lots of sales to the makers, who do provide more 'car like' AWD options. Come north and see the percentage of AWD vehicles, we have winters every year. But it isn't just for snow and ice, drivers want more driving security over all the seasons. BTW, the BMW winter tyre package has been well received up here. Lots of takers and for the storage. I think BMW have seen the light, xDrive and winter tyres, means retaining sales and building sales. HighlandPete |

I can totally understand the need for 4WD in the north of Scotland of course, as your winters hare harsher and longer than for the rest of us, however in reality it is very rarely needed in the rest of the UK where the majority of people and BMW drivers are, and won't be worth the increase in emissions, cost, weight, and fuel consumption all year round. If you take the last 10 years, xDrive would have been really useful for a few days in each of just a few of those years - again I'm talking about the vast majority of the driving population of the UK of course.
With modern stability technologies, 4WD is not needed in day to day driving situations - if that were the case, Audi Quattros would sell like hotcakes and be cheaper to insure than 2WD variants - they don't sell that many (unless it just automatically comes with the engine/transmission combo) and they are the same or more expensive to insure. I would put money on there having been way less than 5% of BMW drivers who have taken up the winter tyre/wheel programme across the UK. People could always import from Scandinavia or Germany or drive an X model, which is what they are designed for after all. What I really don't agree with, and what I was sort of getting at, is that it looks like xDrive may be forced upon 530d buyers later this year, and with most being fleet drivers it will seriously hit them on company car tax because 4WD emissions are so much higher and there's no answer to that on the horizon. With the right tyres/wheels and proper driving technique, the 'typical' UK winter weather and a BMW can cope absolutely fine IMO. Of course this is all just my opinion.

The 5-series xDrive will only be another option from what I understand, so no issue for those who don't want xDrive. I agree on the right tyres/wheels for winter driving, I find the standard RWD 3-series is very confidence inspiring on winter tyres. I had a car go out of control in front of me, on black ice, the other morning, had to brake mid bend on same black ice. Winter tyres saved me from losing control, pretty impressive stop, to be honest. HighlandPete |

OBC says 46mpg, mixed driving, quite a few short 3 mile trips and a few 20mile trips, rest has been +50 mile trips on motorway and I don't hang around but then again have not thrashed the car, been using sports auto and paddle shifts on the A roads. Car has done just under 2000 miles. Just filled up and worked it out and it's done 47mpg, thats better than my previous E61 520d LCI manual so I'm happy.

And that's in relatively cold weather too - will be even better when the weather warms up. Also good that the new OBC appears to be more accruate than it was in my E60 LCI by your calculations.

Bought an F10 520d M Sport with 19"s, sport auto transmission etc and now have 1200 miles done. I've observed the 1200 mile run in period and only on a couple of occasions have I exceeded the 3,500rpm reccomended limit.
I cannot get more than 36mpg regardless of how gently I drive it. Most of my journeys are 15-20 mins and I notice that the engine is just about fully warmed up by the time my journey ends. I am very disappointed with the poor fuel consumption. My last 520D M Sport MT was delivering 43mpg no mapper how hard I drove it. Does anyone think the consumption will improve with time? Its hard to imagine it improving much to be honest. |

Especially in a heavy diesel car this is about what to expect, even more so in winter. Just getting the beast to move away and gain momentum is a fuel leecher. I'm guessing most of that journey is stop/start or urban? The quoted urban is 44mpg and that's when driven in ideal conditions by an expert BMW EU cycle driver.
Petrols are always the way to go with short trips and the 523i would probably beat that figure as a result for that type of journey with a cold engine at start. But there again it is 3k+ more expensive to buy a 523i so it's good old swings and roundabouts.

90% Motorway mileage @ 135KPH with the rest urban / secondary rural routes. No better than my E60 520 D M Sport Auto despite all the Efficient Dynamics tech, but good enough. Interestinlgy, have been driving a 116D loaner for the last week and over the same route is giving IDENTICAL fuel consumption |
