Remember the controversial 2002 Austrian Grand Prix race held on 12 May 2002 in Spielberg, Styria ?

His Brazil 2016 masterclass from P16 to P3: he drove high risk lines that no-one did and recovered going sideways. Imagine if he would have been hired by Mercedes AMG to replace Nico Rosberg who retired in November 2016.

According to Ralf Schumacher (a couple of months ago), Mercedes AMG tried to sign Verstappen early 2021 to replace Hamilton in 2022 (Hamilton had no deal for 2022). It's no secret that Toto Wolff had high esteem for Verstappen. Rumor has it that the Verstappen negotiations postponed the Hamilton negotiations. A deal with Verstappen did not materialize because of Red Bull commitments. Subsequently Mercedes moved to plan B: a deal with Hamilton for 2022 and 2023 (the deal was signed later than previous Hamilton deals). If that is true (unconfirmed, so could be nonsense), it must have deeply hurt Hamilton's feelings. Could be part of the explanation why Hamilton overachieved to prove himself against his nemesis (who, in the end, dashed off with the 2021 cookie) and why Toto Wolff had sometimes bitter words for Verstappen and Red Bull after Spring 2021.

Hamilton could have 'attended' through video live stream, even without saying anything at all, just like Bottas did when receiving the P3 prize: not even a single word. Then technically he would have been 'present'.
