520d Saloon Sport Auto: After 9,500 miles the overall average is 46.6mpg and climbing. I am happy with this. This is real world mixed driving. I would estimate 65:35 ratio of motorway : other.

All these figures, are they from the BC or are they measured on the petrol pump?

My figures are measured at the pump but I have found that the BC is very accurate and usually underreads by about one percent. In other words, the mileage measured at the pump is normally better than that recorded by the BC.

(i) Improved engine technology (ii) The auto box on the F10 changes up quicker and down slower (when running in Normal mode) than I did in my A4 manual. The increased torque in the F10 means the net accelaration is about the same though. |

520d mpsort F11. Sports auto box. 5000 miles 41mpg. Don't know how some of you guys getting 45-46 mpg!!!
This is measured on my OBC and has been not reset since I picked up car end of March. I am not driving like a saint but not like Lewis Hamilton also....60/40 split motorway/trunk. I can average around 620-650 miles brim to brim but did get 720 from one tank when I tried to drive like a nun for a week? Filling it with BP ultimate diesel Maybe 19" wheels and Goodyear r/flats not good for fuel economy? |

Not sure if it has been already mentioned elsewhere in this thread but if you want to see detailed data of actual fuel consumption achieved by users in Germany go to http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/
And for an easy conversion to/from L/100Km to MPG, either Imperial or US, try http://www.eforecourt.com/l_100km_mpg_convert.htm |

Wonderful maturity. Shall we not have the pissing contest maybe?
Back on-topic, that German data is good info Chris. My biggest frustration at present is the disparity between the 2.0 and 3.0 engines in power given that they're only 7mpg apart according to those averages (which are over a sufficiently decent sample set). Really hoping that the smaller engines relax as they bed in, really don't want to have dropped the power but not gained the economy!

520D SE auto 17inch wheels and I am getting 6.4 l/100k after 10000km. (44 mpg). This is with 80% motorway driving doing roughly 130 kph. Seems to be improving slightly over time

Mine has (had before it was stolen) done about 6000 miles since October 10. That is mainly Outer>Central London commute, a couple of long trips and some 'Blue Light' driving (Fire Brigade) maybe once per week.... and it was showing 37.6 the last time I looked. M ol 520d touring was settled at around 31 over 3 years, but used to do more blue light driving back then.

Absolutely Pete, one of those things I guess, knew it prior to ordering too but as time gets closer the reality of stepping from a 335d to a 520d and only picking up 5-10mpg is starting to hit home!!
I'll keep telling myself that the insurance is half price, that may help..

The first 700/800 miles in my car are giving me back 45mpg. 80% motorway driving with sport mode engaged during all town driving.
My first full tank fill up earlier this week, and based on the current miles showing left before fill up on the computer I am expecting to get close to 700 miles from the tank. |

I ordered a 6SP Manual, I will let you guys know how I make out, although mine is a V8. My friend also has a V8 Manual and he gets 33mpg highway. One thing you guys have to keep in mind is that when BMW, or every other car manufacturer gives these MPG estimates its with 1 person in the car, and nothing extra in it. Now if you are driving and have more ppl in the car plus extra stuff like groceries etc, its going to cut down your mpg. it will never be as the advertised if you have more weight in your car than just YOU and the CAR.

True, which is pony for me cos I'm the weight of two people anyway... Seriously though, that's relative, an extra 50kg in a 520 is going to make a much bigger difference than an extra 50kg in a 550 (in the same way that aircon affects fuel consumption more etc) - albeit the whole thing is an exercise in decimal places when put into context.
