Stock Strut Wear on 550i

Took my car all ready this AM for the state inspection and it passed with flying colors (no surprise since I did all the pre-checks and replaced tires and rear pads). What I was surprised to hear was the that front struts were starting to leak. Granted, I have my KW V3s on order so I could care less, but still surprised that they've only lasted for 60K miles. Is this common on the 550is due to engine weight? Or stock struts are crap. I do have Dinan springs, but the drop on those is minimal.

I had hoped to keep them around as spares for if I ever needed to send the KWs for rebuilds. Oh well.

A lot depends on your roads, and if you've lowered the car. I consider 60K miles typical for most dampers to last. They are a wear item and wear out to the point of needing replacement on most cars at 60K+ miles. I don't think I've ever had a car that dampers are as good as new after 60K. Heck some like Koni, wear out at 30-40K.

I agree with you on the roads part for sure. I live in Central Florida where the roads are smooth as glass and I know folks with 15 year old cars and 150k miles that still have original shocks and not a drop out of them and ride fantastic. My 535i has had H&R Springs on it from 30k mi to 45k mi now and no issues yet. I expect them to last quite a while longer, but I do understand that it causes premature wear and I'll pick up a set of coilovers by then.

I also don't do more than maybe 5-6k miles in it anymore enjoying my truck and my Lexus RX hybrid for running around now

Have to admit that I've never kept stock shocks on any car I've ever bought past the first 1-2K. I generally end hating the stock setup and opting for an easy/cost friendly upgrade with Bilstein B6s, and those are bullet proof for 100K+ miles. Unfortunately, there are no B6s (or any Bilstein offerings) for the F10 xDrive cars so I've kept the stock shocks this long to bring myself up to spending $$$$ on the V3s.

In any regard, thx for the comments and feedback on your experiences. Cars do take beating on DC roads.

Got any plans for those Dinan springs?
