Don’t know what BMW model your pic is from...but the f06/f12/f13 6 series gear shift levers look like the pic you posted with the leather-like gear shift boot...and the f15 X5 (at least the one with the M-sport pkg gear shift knob) also has the leather-like gear shift boot.

Something that is similar with these two gear shift levers is that they both have the larger P button and the slightly different overall design than the non sport gear shift handle. What does the gear shift handle & boot look like on the f10/f11 w/sport pkg?

So it must be the ceramic option pkg that gets the gear shift lever with the leather-like boot? If that’s true...then that package offers more than just shiny dials & buttons.

The "fat" shifter goes with the SAT. The "skinny" shifter goes with the non-SAT. They are interchangeable (I installed the SAT shifter on our 2012 when I soded the SAT. They are available on eBay, though not cheap the last time I looked. I wanted to get the ceramic shifter for my 535.

So do I just search ceramic shifter on ebay? And does it need to be coded or something?

Direct swap with no coding. This should keep you busy

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...ifter&_sacat=0

The M5 shifters won't work. I saw a video (or read a post) where someone tried it and failed.

It was mentioned above that this gear shift lever (#2) also came with the SAT (sport automatic transmission) option code S2TBA. So you could have either the "ceramic appliques for controls" option code (S4U1A) or the SAT option code (S2TBA) or both...and your gear shift lever would look like #2 in the diagram below. If you run your VIN through a decoder...you probably have he S2TBA option code since you don't have the ceramic appliques for controls (or a previous owner upgraded to this gear shift lever).

Ceramic is just prettier. I keep looking for an inexpensive one.

Remember the Firestone tire debacle from a few years ago? Just tell her Firestone made the shifter and it's dangerous so you need to upgrade!

I'm offended!!!!!!

It is wider and has a bit of spoon-shape. Put your hand on the back of a spoon and it feels a bit like that. The non-SAT shifter just feels like a rectangular piece. Having had both, to me they are just different. The SAT does have a meatier feel. Should I manually shift, I would use the paddles anyway.

If you like a bit more "girth"...you'll appreciate that little bit extra that the SAT gear shift lever delivers.
