Clock Spring?
2012 528i - So a couple of days ago, the steering wheel started making this crunching noise when doing full turns from a stop (like getting out of a parking spot, then the SRS warning light came on couple of days later. Doing some research, seems like it may be the clock spring in the steering (the noise is definitely behind the wheel inside the car and not suspension related).
Could it be the clock spring and is this a known issue for the F10? Can I drive it a few days before I take it into my tech? Car drives fine. Thanks! |

They do go bad occasionally. Should be fine to drive for now, just be careful.

Damn, just found out it may be a BMW Steering Switch Unit (SZL) which is a larger unit than a traditional clock spring in a regular car. That's a $750 part...hopefully the diagnostic shows otherwise but I doubt it

This happened to my former vehicle and was the damdest thing. I had never heard of the clock spring.
Your airbag light will go out eventually, and then you will lose all control from the various switches on your steering wheel. I think you eventually lose the horn, but can't recall. It was covered by the warranty I had, so I can't remember the cost. But the company initially denied coverage claiming it was an airbag issue. Once I showed the actual part schematic, they paid. Good luck.

Get a used one from eBay. It's about $200 used. 5, 6 and 7 series uses the same one.

Yep, I got a used one from eBay for like $150 when mine went bad - paddles were not responsive was my symptom. These don't go bad that often, so there's not a lot of risk with buying a used one. Just make sure to get it VO coded to your car and maybe istep updated.

Clock Spring Issues After Install
I can't seem to find the answer on any other forum. I have a 2011 BMW 535xi, clock spring went out, so I replaced it with a 2012 750li clock spring, matching numbers and everything. Everything worked as it should, had it programmed at the dealer as well, all they had to do was change the VIN over to my car, perfect. I brought it to them with the airbag light on since this occurred when the clock spring broke. Now they say my clock spring is causing the issue and I need a new airbag to fix this issue (basically saying the two aren't communicating and the airbag is causing the light to stay on, even though the light was on before I got the new clock spring). From research that I have done I have found that after 9/2011 the pins swapped from the CAS and SZL, well my clock spring was from 7/2011 and my car was manufactured in 3/2011, so I don't think there would be an issue there. The code that I have associated with this light is 930910 (Airbag, driver, valve: resistance too high - from ISTA). I've tried 3 airbags from different months and styles, I did NOT reinstall my lane assist motor (if that's even close to what it's called) that vibrates the steering wheel when leaving the lane, but I don't think that would cause this issue.
If anyone has any idea on what I could do that would be appreciated, I'm all ears. Thank you |
