N63 Intakes

While I wait for spring to swap a new n63 into my 550i I decided to make some intakes. Got my iPad out and got a 3d printer for Christmas and spent the day designing and printing AFM “adapter” and intake tubing.

I measured and matched the shape of the stock AFM pipe shape and size. The adapted it the the N63 from the X5 where it bolts to the compressor housing and finally had it exit towards the front to 3” which should pass through with a 45deg end to land behind the grills.

A bit more direct than the current intake kits for sale. Shouldn’t change anything with the way the car behaves as it’s measuring the same way it would as if it was stock. At least in theory. Can’t test it until later this week maybe once I can print 2.

Anyways on to pictures as attached

Opinions welcomed

Wow - that's a serious 3D printer to output something that size. Nice work!

Nice work! I'm working on my own for my X5. What filament did you use?

Nice work but I would be seriously concerned about the working temp of the filiment resin next to the engine and the ability to withstand vibrations based on how 3D printing works on layers. Are you planning to pot it in resin (maybe wrap in epoxy/glass mat and add some insulation to outside of it)?

Used plain PLA for now, kept it thin also for now to test fit as really taking 17or so hours with only a 1.5mm wall. I was planning on doing something like epoxy or something of course due to the heat of these engines.

I do have the 95deg thermostat and the oil cooler valve thing to lower oil temps but i do suspect It would be rather weak.

This was mainly to test fit sizing as well as the AFM bung that everything would fit and line up.

Just waiting for warmer weather and yanking the engine out before i really go hard on this. I just got bored and needed something to do so i designed this.

Will update later as i Progress. I wont be uploading any files for the time being, maybe when i figure everything out. WEll see
