You come from a more powerful engine background, I sense you will find it needs working hard to keep up the pace. If so, no way will you get good economy unless you change style and are every light footed. I personally wouldn't look at a 2.0d GT, would have to be the 530d GT or I know I'd regret the decision. I'd absolutely consider any sized diesel engine if BMW would bring it to the US market. If anything, that's the one thing that's keeping it from being a perfect contender in my car shopping.

I have owned my 520dSE for a month now, covered 1100 miles and economy? 47mpg! Is the engine weak? No not really, the 8sp tranny making up for loss of grunt.

I currently drive a 520d saloon (2009) and get 41-42mpg (imperial) in the winter, 43mpg summer. This is with mixed town and motorway driving.
The newer engine technology is supposed to be better so I am looking forward to my new GT, and even better mpg than I am getting now. Thanks for your input Stonehenge - good to see you are already achieving a great mpg.

If you treat traffic lights as starting blocks, or emergency stop signals, or try to be the first across the intersection, and don't anticipate traffic, it's easy to get the mileage you're getting. Also, if your trips are short, that could easily be a factor...any vehicle will get better mileage if it can fully warm up and cruise verses stop and go with lots of idling in traffic. I tend to get 21-24 mpg in average driving with my 535ix-drive, but have achieved over 30mpg on a long trip with almost entirely interstate on cruise (at about 72mph). The x-drive loses a couple of mpg verses the rear-drive only version, at least in the epa tests.

I have a 2012 530D GT and have been very impressed with the mpg, on a long run (140 motorway miles) i get a computer indicated 46 mpg and round town it drops to around 32.
When I tow, 1700 kg I,m getting 24. I think how you drive the car reflects the mpg you get. |

Driving technique makes a big difference on whatever vehicle you are driving...I've seen over 30mpg (US) on my 535xGT when driving mostly on the limited access highways. Around town, it can be less than 20mpg, and my typical mixed driving is in the order of 21-23mpg. I wish BMW offered the diesel in the USA on the GT, I'd have bought one. It would make a big difference on a long highway trip, and city mileage would be better, too.
