F10 Window Tint
Need some advice
Dropped off my F10 550i at a local tint shop. They just phoned me to inform me that they cannot tint my windows because of the difficult door panels. He claims that when removing the door panels he risks setting off the side airbag. He said he phoned another shop in town and they had one go off on them. So he declined to tint my windows. Has anyone else encountered this issue??

this was an issue I had when tinting my windows.....some installers wanted to remove the door panels and windows! On a brand new car, that is crazy. the windows and door panels don't need to be removed. I drove to an installer 2 hours away to find a good installer who could do the install w/out removing windows/door panels. all the local installers wanted to remove the windows and door panels.....don't do it because it will never be the same! Find a skilled installer.

agreed, i felt scared for the OP when i read "removing the door panels". i do not have much experience when it comes to window tinting, but i have never heard of anyone removing door panels. if i went in a shiny new honda, let alone a BMW, and they wanted to remove door panels, i would laugh and take my business else where.
he did you a favor, find another installer and make sure they have a good guarantee, i have a life time guarantee on my current car |

When I had my E93 tinted, I think the guy removed the felt window protectors at the top of the door, but I don't think he removed any door panels. I don't know what the guys did that tinted my F10. But when I saw a guy in the shop doing another car, I didn't see anything taken apart.

Got it done, they just managed to loosen the upper part of the door so they can tuck the tint underneath the window seal. No issues, looks fantastic.

If you don't mine me asking, how much did you pay and what percentage did you get? I am going this weekend to get mine done. He quoted me $239 for 3m tint all 5 windows and there the best in the area. I got quoted lower at other places but they have crappy tint and I don't want some amateur kid putting it on. ya kno? I dont want a bad tint job.

On my e90 I've got 38% tint in the front and BMW factory sun protection glass in the rear, and that's an very good match.
Not sure if the F10 BMW factory sun protection glass is the same though, at least the color of the f10 sun protection glass looks a bit different to the e90. To me the F10 sun protection glass looks more brownish than the e90 sun protection glass.

Dont be cheap on tint either. You will regret not spending a few extra $ for the better grade (ceramic, i think). Otherwise you will see a lot of scratches in a year!

No need to remove panels
Gang,
I have had the same guy tint the windows in all of my cars for the past 15 years and he is yet to remove a door panel. He just did our 528 last week and did an excellent job as he has done in the past. BTW: he charged $150 US.

Wow, $150??? It takes at least 3-4 hrs and I'm sure the film must cost at least 50-75 bux. I guess people must be desperate for work where your from.
I have a black interior with the pull up shades in the rear. So I went with 40% on all 6 side windows, and 25% on the rear window. Total cost up here in Canada where tint shops are pretty booked up is $300, job was done very well. Im curious, for those that don't have the panel removed or at least pulled back like in my case, I'm assumin the cut the tint right above the seal at the base of the window, is there any concern of it peeling after a while.

Price has not changed in many years.

He has been doing tint for years and has learned to roll the seal down and then is able to place the lower edge of the tint below it. This is the way he able to install the film without removing the door panel....

As for pulling the seal away, go ahead and try doing it on the f10, its not as easy as you make it sound. The shop I went to said they didn't pull the panel off, rather just loosen the upper portion enough to tuck the tint under the seal.

no gaps what so ever. It's a professional place. All they do is window tint, no detailing, car stereos, clear bras or any other service. only tinting.
