drivetrain malfunction, fuel supply warning
hello everybody!
i have a 2013 528i xdrive at 152,000 km (94448.4212miles) so i've been having fuel pump issues for awhile. about 8 months ago i got my lpfp replaced and my cars been driving well. i got an oil change done a few week ago and about 1 or 2 days later i get the dreaded drivetrain malfunction warning and my car stops midtraffic. wonderful. i got it towed to a specialist who couldnt find out what the problem was. they said a code popped up saying something about hpfp implausible so they said it wasnt the hpfp. they changed some turbo valve, which was leaking they said. an lpfp sensor, and replaced the serpentine belt. they charged 600$ which i guess was kinda fair. i mentioned my scans on my foxwell noted a fuel pump control module fault and a central gateway module fault, and they said "well our scanners are better" fair enough. i then got my engine air filter replaced because the oil change place declined due to the sway bar in the way, and the cabin filter changed 255$ even after supplying my own brand new filters. ive ordered new coil packs and sparkplugs which i will get replaced. though i replaced my spark plugs right before the first replacement of my low pressure fuel pump. the specialist quoted a hpfp from bmw at 2100$ lol no i will not pay that. on ectuning they had a bosch one for 266$ i called in and they said its perfectly fine and the only difference to the bmw oem one was that came with an updated adaptor and fuel injection fuel feed pipe. which he sent me a link to for an extra 100$ ive booked an appt at bmw to find the root cause of this mess. which of course i have to wait 2 weeks at the calgary BMW to even get in. long story short any suggestions or ideas from the fine people here? I would first hook back up your foxwell and do a live data view, turn the ignition on the way on and get a reading on your fuel rail pressure which should be at least 60psi with the ignition on and engine off, if not then good indication your LPFP is out again or the sensor. When the engine is cranking, the rail pressure should jump to 1600psi+, when running it should vary up to 2500psi depending on rpm and throttle demands, if not then good bet your HPFP is toast. Assuming it is the HPFP. If you are not into turning wrenches yourself, I bet there is a independent shop in your area that can do it faster and cheaper then the dealer. Looks to be an 1 hour job tops. I have the N63 engine and it uses very similar pumps (it has two of them). Super easy to replace but you do need some good tools like crows-feet and a torque wrench as well at meticulous cleanliness of all the fuel connections. |

I'd find somewhere else to take it to. You should be able to supply your own parts. Used or new. Obviously they can't guarantee anything you supply. But that's the chance you take. Any shop that claims they can't make any money at $100+ /hr is full of it. They sound like they don't have a clue as to what is causing your issue. Real mechanics don't throw parts at problems. Tell them to guarantee that this will fix the problem. Otherwise you're not paying.
