Preventive HDD cloning/replacement in CIC

Hi all:

I've been thinking lately that I would like to at least grab an image of the HDD in my CIC unit while it's working fine, or possibly even replace it preventively.

Anyone with an F10 ever done such a thing?

I have come across this E90 thread here which includes a link out to a non-BMW forum for inspiration.

Adding storage isn't a concern, I have hardly any music loaded on my CIC. A working CIC and a DIY way of managing a failed disk repair down the road is my goal.

When my CIC HDD dies, I suspect it will be much easier to restore an image of my own CIC backed up somewhere safe than find a usable CIC image "out there" that will work.

I swapped out my HDD for a SSD a number of years ago in my F10 - zero problems and very easy to do.

Thanks I'll review the above - it wasn't one of the threads I looked at so far.

I'm on the fence about caring about an SSD "upgrade". Operating temperature range seems to be a bit of a challenge from what I've read so far. I am interested in having a backup (pun intended) plan for when the included HDD fails. Which exact SSD did you end up using? I think there are a couple mentioned in the thread based on a quick scan.

I'm happy to read that it seems that the CIC will still perform basic car functions even if there's an issue with the drive. I can live without NAV and ripped music while I implement a fix but I can't live without any CIC functionality at all

My post is more about backing up the hard disk in the CIC to be able to fix a failure far more easily down the road whenever it happens.

Others on the Internet are interested in swapping the CIC hard disk to an SSD so that it is faster to use and/or can hold more music.

SSD's are also more shock resistant, so that's a good benefit if you drive on rough roads a lot.

I don't think I have heard of one failing, usually it is the fan or screen.
Cold won't hurt an SSD.
You also might want to bone up on QNX OS to make sure you get the whole drive.

Meaningless update. So far I haven't got this to work.

I purchased
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B09...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If I recall correctly, clonezilla could not clone the QNX volume (sat thinking indefinitely, I believe) so I used dd. I had to make a modification to the case to widen the plastic opening slightly so that it could be inserted.

When installed, the Nav would not start up. Very cold weather was approaching so after a couple of attempts I set it aside for now. At least I got a DD image of the original drive on my NAS in case something happens to the original.

Not sure if anyone has any specific advice about why mine might not be working. Loads of possibilities but no definitive pointers. By feel I believe that the pins are making proper contact with the slot in the CIC.

Files that need to be copied or transferred quickly are placed in the cache on the disk. This is a kind of hard disk buffer. It is based on flash memory. Therefore, it is much faster than a mechanical HDD. The cache size in external HDD can vary from 8 to 64 MB. The more of it, the faster the files will be transferred. However, there is one thing: all this is true only for small files. Therefore, it is unlikely to be suitable for games. In addition, you will be able to recover data using DATA RECOVERY SERVICES. So think about the purchase.
