F10 535xi axle replacement?
Good idea or bad idea? Aftermarket axles or stick oem only?

Is there something wrong with the current Axles? What are you hoping to gain? How modded is the car?

Just cosmetic mods. Axles are making clicking noises when turning and driving straight on the highway. I put the car on a lift to see what's wrong and both boots on each side is ripped and greases all over. My mechanic suggests new axles, instead of just replacing the boots.

I had both my clamps fall off this winter on the front. I suspect the cold weather, launching around 1.5k and flat spins. Anyhow, new boots wont fix the CV. If its clicking its fkd and will only get worse. Only my left one was clicking the right one i was able to just put the boot back on and grease before it was damaged. I wasn't unable to find anyone to rebuild it. New from dealer they are 800$. Took me a couple months to find one used on car-part.com paid 265$ shipped. Install is a bish, have to remove the full engine splash guard. GL

FWIW a couple of years ago I ordered two front axles for my daughter's Passat from Raxles.com. Great prices and easy R/R instructions (at least it was on the VW). I did them in my driveway in a couple of hours. I don't know if they have F10 axles or how hard the R/R would be but you might give them a call. http://www.raxles.com

Can't find the damn axle assembly anywhere!
Can anyone provide help? Don't want to shell out $1100 bucks to the dealer for a driver side axle assembly for 2011 535i xdrive. I think the OEM is made by the same company who sells the after market (GKN Loebro) but I can't find anyone with any in stock. Afraid to keep driving my car with the clicking sound because I don't know the possible risks for further driving. Any suggestions on where I can get the axle or what are the potential dangers of driving with the clicking for a few months until I get the part. Cost difference is pretty big ($330 vs $1100). Thank you!

I ended up buying an bmw axle from a website called newparts, they sold it for $855 (with a $50 core rebate) and hopefully I should have it next week. Every other place didn't sell the OEM $350 axle and the place I'm having my car fixed will only install new parts. I'm wondering what could happen while I continue to drive the axle like this? I'm scared the wheel will come off or something but I don't have access to another car.

The wheel will not come off if the axle fails.
Worst case the CV breaks and the axle flops about whacking the suspension. The number of axles I've seen come into the shop with boots ripped for so long they were completely gone, and grease had given way to metal dust... you don't need to worry, drive normally and you'll be fine for a bit. |
