N20 seized engine - Oil pressure error threw. Car shut down 1 minute later

So driving on the highway yesterday, my F10 2012 threw an oil pressure error. Basically told me to stop the car.

I drove for maybe 50 seconds then the car threw another error: drivetrain error, car will shut off, may roll and not be able to get into neutral.

Didn't start after that.

Question is: is the engine toast? Is there an automatic engine shut down mechanism that activates to prevent engine damage?

How long can a car run without engine oil before ruining the engine?

ALSO: no low oil errors at all in the past few weeks. Engine started sounding a little rough 2 weeks ago.

Towed to BMW. Still waiting, would like your input.

Sounds like your 528i N20 timing chain guide broke, you are covered under a 7 year 70,000 miles extended warranty.

Hopefully you are within 7 years and 70k miles from your purchase. Sounds like a timing chain and guide failure. BMW extended the coverage for this to 7yrs/70k and will replace the timing chain and plastic guides, and perhaps the engine if its toast. How many years/miles on yours?

Btw, I just got mine replaced just under warranty by a few days. Mine didn't blow up like yours, but I heard the whine that let me to believe this was the issue.

74K miles, and purchased 3 years ago from outside dealership. So I think I'm TOAST on the warranty.

But this is good input. I'm sure costly repair if even possible....

What WOULD the cost have been? Did they detail that on the invoice?

Doesn't hurt to ask dealership -> BMW NA for good will repair and see if they will cover it.

Do you use the auto start stop feature?

Firstly, dont give up so easily. You are close enough on mileage where BMW may do it for you. If dealer says no, call corporate and push nicely. Remember this was extended warranty from BMW for this known issue! It doesn't matter if you bought is used or from someone else. Btw, they will ask you for service records and oil changes (which you should have). Here is the SIB number:

SIB 11 03 17

Here is a link to educate yourself:
https://bmwtechnician.com/2017/08/02...-bmw-bulletin/

On its own, changing the timing chain and guides would be a $4k job, but if it killed your engine you are looking at $8k for a new one.

Good luck and keep us posted

I know someone got error that related to the timing chain guide at 73k miles. Dealer helped to deal with BMW-NA and finally paying $1800 to replace.

Aha! Now that would work. I'd hate to have to fork out 4-5K. Fingers crossed.

Thanks

Firstly, what is the dealer saying? Is your engine toast? yes, and definitely push for BMW to cover fully since you are so close to the warranty? When was the vehicle in-service date? You could be within the 7 years.

Let them come back to offer you a deal. you should keep pushing for full coverage by BMW

I will definitely push. Dealer isn't saying anything yet. You really think they'll work with me? Service date is 4/2012. So I think I'm in!

You are only 3k over the extended warranty, but still under the 7 years. I hope you have the service history since you bought it, like all oil changes done on time, even if not done by the dealer. If so, I think you have a good shot at BMW covering it, just push for it and dont give in. If your engine is shot, it may be more difficult but they may meet you half way. If the engine is fine, they may cover the timing chain and guide replacement. Just dont be angry, work with them calmly and professionally. BMW has always stepped up.
Mine was no questions asked but i was just within warranty, and nothing broke. i heard the signs and took it in and the dealer said it was the timing chain guides and applied the SIB I gave you. Make sure you make them aware that you know about the SIB and the issues with these timing chain guides.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Ok! I'll definitely reference the SIB. Thing is, foolishly, I haven't kept up with oil changes and servicing the way I should have. It might put me in a tight spot moving forward. Car is at BMW today, and they should at least have an answer on what is wrong soon. Will update thread ASAP.

Well. BMW says needs new engine. Oil pump malfunctioned, or something similar, and they're saying 11K cost on engine. This is the absolute worst case scenario. I mean. BMW corporate out of the question now? Sigh. Please advise.

So sorry to hear this. You have to wonder if the oil pump failure wasn't somehow related to the recall issues? A total engine failure at 74k is pretty crazy - seems like even if this is not timing chain related it's a good case for some good will relief from BMW.

Back in the day, my 1993 318i, the head gasket started leaking at about 55,000 miles and BMW handled it 100% as goodwill. There were no active recalls etc. at the time in my case, so you never know until you give it a try.

Thats tough man. Did they say anything about a good will coverage by BMW? If you have no maintenance records and haven't taken care of the car, you may be SOL, but doesn't hurt to try

What exactly do you mean by this? No oil changes, oil changes after 2 years? Ignoring low oil warning? Oil pumps usually fail if oil is not maintained properly.
