DIY Retrofit M5 Gear Knob and Center Console

Hi all,

For quite some time I have been curious on how to retrofit the F10 M5 gear shifter into a normal F10, I personally enjoy the look and shift pattern of the DCT gear selectors. I dislike how there are certain companies charging thousands for this information (I only spent $150 on the console, switches, and shifter. Coding takes less than 10 minutes.)

I would like to give big credit to: slobo7x, he has been answering my questions for almost a year about this retrofit.

Warning #1: you cannot install the M5 gear shifter flush with a normal center console, and you can also not install an M5 center console with a normal gear shifter. (You may be able to do this both ways, but the gear selector trim would require some modding...)

Warning #2: It is not possible to shift to M/S mode on the M5 gear shifter, which means you will lose S1 and full manual mode, but it is still possible to use temporary manual mode with the paddle shifters. Also, the D/S letter on the M5 gear shifter does NOT light up when you are in drive.

Info #1: I am in contact with someone working on a M5 gear shifter emulator (no coding is required once this exists) to fix all the problems above!! I will update this thread when that is available/more updates.

Info #2: If your parking brake button has Auto-Hold, you will need to remove the Auto-Hold button or buy a new parking brake button without the Auto-Hold function.

Required Parts:
1. F10 M5 Gear Shifter, P/N: 61317846583
2. F10 M5 Center Console, P/N: 8050679
3. F10 M5 Center Console Switches P/N: 6131784634: -3, -4, or -5.
Often #2 and #3 can be found bundled together on sites like eBay.
If #3 does not come with a plug and wires, then just purchase a generic BMW 12 pin connector.

Required Tools:
1. Coding Program (BimmerCode, eSYS, etc...)
2. Trim Removal Tools
3. Various sizes - Torx screwdriver.

Tutorial:
1. Start by lifting off the armrest button cover to uncover this screw and remove it:

2. Then, slowly start prying around the trim until all clips are loose:

3. Lift the center console up, and unplug all connectors:

4. Make note of the two connectors that go in to the PDC and drive mode switches:

5. Grab your new center console and start by preparing the wires. In short, you will need to take out each wire from the two connectors in step #4, I have created a wiring diagram as such (credits to slobo7x for original diagram), NOTE: you will need to splice the parking brake ground cable (Brown) to go in to pin 12 if you want the buttons to be backlit:

6. Unscrew old gear shifter and install and screw in new M5 gear shifter (normal gear shifter and M5 gear shifter use the same connector type):

7. Put all other components into the new center console and plug everything back in:

8. Briefly turn on the vehicle to test if all center console switch buttons are working:
- If all works, turn off the car and continue to step #9.
- If not, turn off the car and recheck the wirings to make sure you wired them properly.

9. Prepare your car for coding, once you are connected, follow and code this diagram below:

10. After coding there should be no errors, enjoy!

If you have any questions, feel free to reply!

Nice job bud, Well done!

Hopefully your contact can figure out how to build a chip to enable true sport mode activation with the m5 shifter.

If only the gws ecu was codable, I think this would resolve most of the issue.

Whatever you do, do not flash the gws ecu with the m5 shifter you will brick it.

Do you know how to code f10 m5 cluster on f10 520 Diesel ? I added the cluster on the car and only the mph-metter is working, the revs not work, the oil tem not work, the gas tank not work, and many others not work, when I log with esys on the car I don't see the KOMBI , I see it unavaibile.
