Trunk lid rant.

Well after the last big snowfall (about 10 inches of the white stuff), I went out to open the trunk to get my snow brush and when the trunk lid went up, a whole bunch of snow slid off the lid and went right into the trunk itself.

Maybe it's just my imagination but I don't remember my other cars depositing as much rain/snow into the trunk as this car does. I know first world problems right??

Yeah I noticed that after I got my car that even if the trunk is wet, it's going to spill into the trunk. It's the first car that I've had with this issue. Now I just wipe away extra water before opening the trunk.

Hasn't snowed yet since I got mine, but I guess I'll make a note to leave the shovel & brush in the house

Happens all the time for me after rain or a car wash! I just open the lid slowly. She doesn't see snow so I couldn't comment on that respect

BMW has a bulletin for this issue.

Remedy is move to Florida.

Really, sorry to hear this. I haven't noticed same with rainwater and my MY16 535.

Where does you snow go to from the trunk lid in other cars?

Once the trunk lid is raised, a lot of snow slides off on to the back window. It seems like the design/angle of the back window causes more snow to fall into the trunk than other cars. My wife's car (Hyundai Sonata) was parked next to mine in the same conditions and when I opened her trunk lid, a little bit of snow went into the trunk but nowhere near as much as went into mine. As I said before, it seems like in this car more snow falls into the trunk than on my past BMWs.

And yes I do need to move to someplace with no snow.

I am really not trying to be assy, but where did the Sonata's snow go? Does it stick to the trunk lid? Does it plop on the window? Does it fall off to the sides? Is it because the trunk of the F10 pops all of the way up even with snow on it while the Sonata's was held down by the snow so it was opened more slowly?

I know, no offense taken and I do realize this is a huge first world problem

To answer your question, most of the snow on my wife's car just falls on the window and then stays there. A little bit of snow made it into her trunk and I expect some snow to fall in the trunk. My car has the auto opening trunk and when the trunk reached the vertical position a lot of snow fell of the trunk lid directly into the trunk and a bunch fell on the back window then slid into the trunk. Of course then with all the snow in the trunk opening, the auto close would close but not secure the trunk lid. I'm not sure if the gap between the trunk lid and the trunk opening is a lot bigger on the 5 series allowing this to happen, guess I'll have to check it out.

Guess I'll have to invest in one of those trunk liners or move to a warmer climate.

That makes sense. Usually, I guess I just don't let my trunk open wide when it's covered with snow while I get my brush. I just keep my hand on it so it doesn't go all of the way up.

and SERIOUSLY, get a trunk liner! Ask for one for Christmas or go buy one yourself. With so many electronics stored under the floor, it's just not worth the risk of anything wet in your trunk without one.

That and I moved my snow brush to the floor of the backseat so I won't have to open the trunk until the snow is removed, Ockham's razor to the rescue.

Snowbrush on the floor of the back seat - that's the answer.

+1
Snowbrush on the back seat floor. Also a spare in the garage, which hasn't had a car in it for over 30 years.
Auto trunk feature is great but it can't be stopped halfway without a struggle, so snow winds up in the trunk.

I never had issue with rain or snow.

But, since moving to the west coast, I have trouble with car covers. I either take off the cover, as-is, and all kinds of debris it collected lands on vehicle; or, I hose off and have nowhere to place the now-wet protector.
