you only need the 3.5mm audio cable for the basic playback via AUX input. But you don't get to control the iPod using the iDrive.
for full iDrive connectivity, yes you need the Y-cable. |

There is a USB slot where you can use a USB drive but if you want to use an iPod, you need the Y cable. It was included with my '08 car, should be included when you order the 6FL iPod/USB option.

Never heard of USD audio, did you mean USB? With Sept production, the 5 series will move to a single USB slot as I understand it, dropping the required Y cable in place of a standard USB cable from the iPod. BMW USA still shows Ipod/USB option but that will shift soon. Maybe BMW.CA is showing Sept production options already...

The cable has been standard in the US when the USB/iPod option is ordered but I have heard of dealers charging for the cable. And in some countries the cable must be purchased. Other Canadian owners will have to confirm for you...

How come my 07 550i ipod adapter inside the dash doesn't use a y-cable? my 2010 cooper s does have the y cable and exposed to the eye of the public. Why did BMW do this? Where is the USB located on the F10?

The iPod adapter on your '07 is different than the iPod option on '08 and later 5 series. The LCI cars have the iPod/USB in the center console as opposed to the glove box. Not sure on the F10 but likely the same center console...

To get a desirable level of functionality out a I-Pod I would definitely get the car prepped for it and use the BMW Y Cable. It works quite well. The next version with SOP in September will work even better.

One idea: I THINK it's possible that the F10 already comes with the September-2010 iDrive/USB changes. Reason? 1. I remember I read somewhere (in the press release I think) of the F10 that it included A2DP Bluetooth music streaming. 2. Member Lukeswarm (UK) said in his test drive of the F10, he saw album art on the iDrive and the car read his emails. Both of these are features outlined in the September 2010 changes. If this is true, then it's safe to assume that the F10 already comes with these changes. And if that's the case, then it no longer needs a Y cable; a standard iPod USB cable is all that's needed. |
