F10 535i big turbo vs M5

Trying to decide if I should build up a 535i or go with the M5. Can get a 535 6 speed for around 15k, get coilovers, M5 brakes, Pure stage 2 and fueling, all for less than the cheapest 6 speed m5 I have seen. I would imagine the lighter I6 vs v8 would help handling as well. The m5 would end up being more powerful, but I think 450whp is more than I will need anyways. If not I can build up a block to swap in. I am looking for a daily that I can track a few times a year. Wondering other people's thoughts, seems like big turbo 535i's are pretty rare

If you want a fast car, then get a M5. The 535i platform just cant compete with it. I used to have a 535i but wanted fasted and instead of building the 535i, I just ended up getting a M5.

You could also look into 550i but the earlier have a lot of problems (2011-2013).

You're better off with building off the M5. Even with all the upgrades you do to the 535i it'll cost you more and still end up with less power than the a stock M5

Maybe the issues with the engine are exaggerated on forums, but I have seen quite a bit of excessive oil consumption and the occasional blown motor with the S63. Used blocks still are $10k+ from what I have seen, vs the cheap N55. I don't know what happens when these "blow up" as it seems most people have them covered under warranty. If it is a spun bearing, or something that doesn't end up ruining the main block I guess that isn't as big a deal. I'm just trying to make a plan for a worst case scenario.; an STi I bought awhile back blew up the second week I had it so I have become a little paranoid I guess. Rebuilding that wasn't bad but Subaru parts are pretty damn cheap

Probably spend some time on the technical forums as there's plenty of guys posting their N55 builds with their gains as well as issues they're running into whether its Mission Performance tunes or Stage 2 upgrades with all the bells and whistles and than you can decide if this works in your favor with the 535i

Well.... It's one thing if you like the modification part of things and consider it a hobby. Then you can go whichever way you like and enjoy the process.

If you're looking for a vehicle of certain capability or style, you're probably far better starting with the M5. They're enthusiast oriented from the start. You'll pay more, but you'll also sell it for more. And if it's stolen or totaled, insurance will give you more - something in line with what it would cost to replace it. Mod money is just gone, and may never be as well sorted out as a factory M car.

I have a 2011 535i and a 2013 M5. No comparison. If you want a high performance and fast car, get the M5. I daily my 535i and drive the M5 when it is nice.

Thanks for the responses. The mod money just being gone and not adding value does suck. I would much rather buy one with the mods already done and having lost the value already, but manual transmission cars of either type are pretty rare, much less one that has the mods I want.
