Buying advice on a 2015 535i xDrive

Good day gentlemen,

I’m about to pull the trigger on a 2015 535xi that has 47,000 miles on the clock, has a clean Carfax report with no accidents. It comes with 4 new tires (Pirelli RFTs unfortunately). The car is fully optioned out with M Performance package, M Sport Package, Technology package, Premium Package with Harman Kardon audio & 20 inch M434 style wheels.

As per the sales fella the car has been through their 150 point inspection. It is not a CPO. The car is priced at CD$35,000 (US$ 26,000). The factory warranty ends in 3 weeks. I have been quoted C$5,000 for 3 year extended warranty. The car is located at a BMW dealer 800 miles away so I cannot see it in person.

Is this a good buy?

I must also mention that this will be my first ever BMW & yes I’m based in Canada.

Thank you all for your help.

My opinion is only based upon prices in Florida, but that is a good price. Has it only had one owner? If two, I would be suspect.

Thank you. This car had just one owner.

I would question why it is not CPO and are you really willing to buy sight unseen?

I think it's a reasonable price, not great and not bad! (In reference to WA state prices)

Definitely worth asking why it isn't certified / if it can be certified. Not that it rules it out, but you may get some useful data from that question to help inform your decision. For instance, one used 540 I passed on was not certified because it had been used at a BMW performance center when new. Another turned out to have been used to help train BMW techs. You never know ..

Gorgeous car and great price. I don't know if I'd spend $5000 for the warranty though.

No CPO is very suspicious. I would want an indy inspection at a minimum.

Good luck.

What I was told that CPO process pushes up the price & they want to keep the prices competitive. I will be travelling to the location before I sign on the dotted line. The dealer wants a $5,000 deposit though for the car to keep it aside.

After some negotiations they have come down to CD$ 33,000 (US$24,600) plus CD$ 815 in doc fee & some other bull such as detailing/fuel fee & they are not budging on that.

Well, as I've mentioned earlier they said that they want to stay competitive & CPO pushed up the prices (their reason, didn't find it very convincing though).

This car is a lease return and has been sitting on their lot since March this year.

I did a little bit of research of the pre owned inventory of the BMW dealers (5) in the city & found less than 5% of their pre owned inventory is Certified.

Being a first time BMW owner this is a bit of uncharted territory for me. So you're suggesting that I save the money & use it towards repairs as and when the need arises?

Good luck.
I did call up a shop in the area that specializes in the European cars & he said that they will gladly do it but it is somewhat unnecessary as the subject dealer has comprehensive process & they would be doing almost the same thing.

If you can find out its complete maintenance history I'd say it's a pretty safe bet at that price.

I like CPO but these days it only adds 1 year and the CPO price would be a lot higher. $5k for 3 year warranty is way too much IMO.

This is the 535i. There be repairs needed but if you spend anytime looking for reviews on the 535i, you will find many replies where it is suggested to just bank that $5,000 and use for repairs, as needed. I had a 2012 535i for 4 years and went from 37K miles to 105k miles, drove hard, and ended up paying, in total, $2,100 for repairs. This does not include wear and tear items like tires, filters, etc.

The price looks very fair, how is the interior condition?

I have bought cars sight unseen 3 times, expect a couple of items you'll need to repair or update yourself...

Is there nothing local or close? Why this one so special?

Since your'e getting a good deal, I would spend the extra money to get a Fidelity warranty. You can find it way cheaper than 5k. I just used Fido on my R8 for a $5k strut repair they paid it no problem. Do some searches.

Try to get them to throw in the shipping.

You could still consider a remote PPI. Ask them to drop it off at an indy to go over the car. Although having a little warranty left, I would take it to my local dealer immediate after purchase to have them go through the car for any potential repairs

Depending on where you’re located, maybe someone on the forum could visit the car for you? Where is the car located?

The interiors are in very good condition (at least that's how they look in the pictures).

Unfortunately, three cars that are available where I'm located are either overpriced or don't have a clean history (accidents). This one has a clean Carfax and interior/exterior are in fairly good shape.

I'm in fact contemplating the BMW extended warranty (7 years/100,000 kms) so I'll get another 3 years/25,000 kms. This will not be daily driver.

I'm seriously considering the PPI (if I can only get it into one of the European car specialists within reasonable period of time).

Thank you for your feedback!

Since the vehicle is a lease, it's safe to assume it had the maintenance done at the dealer. Before you go to look at the car in person, ask the dealer to send you the Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.

It will show you the actual maintenance history with the dealer as claims made against warranty, among other things. Very useful document.

I've had 2 different dealers provide this for cars I was considering, so you shouldn't get any pushback. Especially if they're asking for a $5k deposit (that seems high--I've only had to leave $1k).

And good luck! You're gonna love the 535.

If it's not a daily driver then I wouldn't worry too much about an extended warranty. How many yearly miles/km's do you plan on driving? It would probably be better to just bank the warranty monies for any possible future repair. $5K will go a long way on the N55. Our 2102 535i has over 85K miles and still going strong with nary (well, other than the OFH and valve cover gaskets) a hiccup. Your, IMHO, only problem area will be the transfer case. They seem to be the F10's weak link.

Can't ever go wrong with a PPI.

Does the Carfax show all the service that was done at Dealer? I recently bought a lease return '16 535 CPO from 1500 miles away. Couldn't be happier, the thing was IMMACULATE! i DID have someone go look at it first though. Don't be afraid to buy one from further away and go get it. I see there is no Carfax listed for it, I find that odd. I also see it has auto=highbeams, nice feature and one of the few my car didn't have.

I was recently looking at purchasing basically the same year and model and it is non-CPO. I was told the reason it is non-CPO is that is it 4 years old so it expired. I assume it is the same case with this one.

My advice is not to buy 4 year old 5 series with no BMW CPO warranty.
It's your money, but you are playing with fire in my opinion, repairing these cars even at independent shop is not cheap.

Price is good, but it's good for a reason, I would look for one that's certified.

150 point inspection is worthless.
