Staggered Tires

Hello everyone, need your advice on tires. 2014 535i xDrive w/M Sport package. Current tires are 245/40-19 and there getting close to then end. I've recently picked up a 650i convertible and it came with two sets of tires, but they're staggered. 245/40 - 19 on the front and 275/35 - 19 on the rear. Are those tires ok to install on the 535? A circumference difference of 0.4" and 4 revolutions per mile. Am I safe??

Tirerack lists these sizes as alternate, which I wouldn't think they would do if it would damage the car. A friend with a 535i GT xDrive had the wrong tires installed and lost the transfer case (?), expensive repair but the shop that screwed up, covered the cost.

Many thanks.

Yes. I've been running those tires specs on my 2013 535xi for five years. You should have a difference between front and rear tire circumference (and diameter) of less than 1% to not kill your xDrive transfer case. BMW even delivered factory F10s with those tire sizes. With a 245/40/19 front tire, you can run either a 275/35/19 or 285/35/19 rear tire. You can use this website to check out the differences:

Tire Calculator

By putting on staggered tire sizes, you should, at least for cosmetics, also consider having staggered wheels, with the rear wheels being wider. I have 8.5" front width and 9.5" rear width wheels, and they work well with the aforementioned tires. I think the BMW factory width for staggered setup is 9" on the rear.

Edit: not all tires are created equal. A tire's actual size may differ slightly from the spec, and therefore a matched pair of staggered tires is not necessarily going to be within tolerance. This is one of the reasons that BMW certifies some tires to work on their vehicles, even with staggered setups. I have Michelin Pilot Super Sports, and many on this forum have used these for a staggered setup on xDrives. I have not heard of many (if any) that indicated transfer case problems with this brand, for example.

Thanks so much for the help. The tires are Toyo Proxes 4 Plus from my 650i. I am sticking with the factory 20" wheels on the 650. My Goodyear tires are almost worn out on the 535, so I was going to mount these to the BMW 19" wheels that are on the 535. These tires came mounted to some ART replica wheels, but I don't like them near as much as the factory BMW wheels.

Here is a link to the tires. I was going to sell them, but now I'm thinking I will keep the tires and sell the wheels.

According to one site I used to look at the sizes, the difference is .59%, so that's well under 1%. Thanks again.
