Staggered setup possible?

Hello Guys,

I have a 2014 528ix (non-M-Sport) with Style 351 wheels 19x8.5 +33 all around. I am in the need of the new tires and was wondering if I can do a staggered setup? The previous owner did put H&R lowering springs.

I know I can only go 255 wide on the 8.5 wheels, maybe like 255/50/19? But what about the front? I live in NYC so don't want to thin tires for potholes.

Yes, you can do a staggered setup, and many (including me) have done it on xDrives. I'm running 245/40/19 in front, and 275/35/19 in back. Given that you don't plan on changing wheels, and as you have noted, I'm not sure you are gaining anything by going up to a 255mm width instead of 245mm width. This really doesn't do anything.

No, I don't recommend going with 255/50/19 tires on front or rear - I think they will be too tall for the car. You should be able to get away with 255/45/19 tires all around, as I have successfully done this with an equivalent setup on 18" wheels. If you are that concerned about potholes, then perhaps you should consider going with 18" wheels instead, and getting appropriately sized tires for those like 245/50/18.

You can run a staggered setup but not with your original wheels. I would recommend 255/40/19 if you want a little thicker sidewall. 255/50/19 is too thick. Your speed will be off a lot too. Going 60mph, your vehicle will actually be going 65.2mph.

255/45-19 is 28" tall. If it doesn't rub the suspension knuckle it will be awful close. A 245/45-19 is 27.7" tall and I run that as a square winter tire setup with no issues.

I have a 2013 535i GT XDrive. It had 22'' staggered rims on it. (the car drove fine, no issues) I cracked one and they're discontinued so I just put 20'' staggered on. Tires are 245/40/20 and 275/35/20 and now the car is jumping. Any advice? Do I have to take them off?

Why is the car jumping. And what do you mean by jumping?

I am looking into putting 20" as well.

Tire pressure too high?

I did think the tire pressure was an issue. When I had the 22"s on all tires were at 42 psi. If a tire went low I felt the same issue. I've tried different pressures according to the tires sizes but not a solution yet. This is what someone on another forum said:

"What most report when the Transfer Case has issues is simply hesitation on medium to hard acceleration up to about 90 MPH (XDrive shuts off at high speeds). It feels like the Engine Power cuts off about half a second, comes back and repeats same.

So the Tire Sizes appear OK. If it really is hesitating you could try changing the Oil and perform a SW reset. Most change the Oil twice since it has to be auctioned out… Change, drive a bit and change again, then the SW reset."

That kinda describes the "jumping". The first day or two it was with even normal driving not medium to hard acceleration, now it's happening less often but want to get to the root of it. Going to try changing the oil for now
