Another update gentlemen. Driving the car today and the engine shutoff while driving. It put me into neutral and I believe the engine is locked up. The start initiated but isn't turning over. I'm at a loss of words.

well sh!t... I'm sorry to hear that. I can only keyboard-diag/ theorize that all the material off a single bad bearing wore off whilst on the previous oil. Thus no unusual particles found for this sample which was a following oil change... but the damage was already done and all the bearing needed to lock up then was some heat (complete theory here).

Another update. My BMW dealership tells me that the engine needs to be replaced. I'm about to go into them about the cost. Thinking of also selling the car as is but I don't know what price to sell for since I don't know where to compare from. Can anyone give any insight?

If you're changing your filters with every oil change like you're supposed to, any flakes in the filter will show up on the oil analysis.

Oil analysis, oddly, can often be normal even with metal flakes visible in the engine oil. The oil analysis is helpful if you can't see metal contamination. If you can see metal, an oil analysis is not likely to tell you much more..
BTW these engines can eat their cam bearing ledges too, resulting in metal slivers in the oil filters. Always worth cutting open an oil filter when doing a change. |

Unfortunately I have to cut my losses on the car and sell it as is. I have a current buyer already situated and I'm looking to get a Lexus or perhaps a 330i

For what it's worth, this guy found metal flakes, pulled his bearings, and the bearings were fine. Some wear on the upper bearings but nothing serious.
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1582205 Edit: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...60&postcount=2 A different perspective. Interesting to see that they have the 2011 N55, which a lot of people seem to say has issues with rod bearings.
