New 2016 550i M Sport owner for 48hrs
So I just picked up a 2016 550i M Sport and the engine seized on day 2 of owning it lol. It was pretty tough watching the BMW tow service drag it on to the truck because they couldn’t figure out how to put it in neutral, the transmission made a nasty pop as they dragged it smh. It was just as painful watching it get dropped off as the tow truck tilted the bed all the way up and bounced it off using the winch in an on/off motion.
They are saying it will need a new engine but they can’t check the transmission until a new engine is put in. They won’t buy the car back and if I want another cpo I’ll have to take trade in value on my 48hr old 550. They said they would give me a great deal on a new M2 comp at a little over double the monthly payment. I’m not sure what to do. Do any of you have experience with a engine and possibly transmission replacement? I’m a little spooked about the car now and I’m looking for advice on anyone who has been through this. |

I woud make the tow company pay for the transmission. Getting it in neutral isn't rocket science and any reputable tow company should know how. I believe it's even in the manual (I could be wrong).
As for the rest, BMW are paying for a new engine, which will come with a 2 yr warranty. Personally, I would go that route and basically have a new car. |

WOW, can't believe the morons did that, especially BMW tow service should know(on the ZF8HP in BMWs, you must remove the protection plate and turn the bolt on the drivers side of the transmission until it engages the neutral release lever). Your transmission most likely has serious damage done to it I am sorry to say

You popped the motor in 2 days? A BMW tow service that doesn't know how to put it in neutral? A reman motor because a new isn't available right now?
So much missing from this story. I would fight tooth and nail to get out of the deal completely! |

I was pushing some today (day 3 of owning the car) for them to refund my money to purchase another cpo off their lot but they said that I would only get trade in value, I’d lose my taxes, processing fee, etc and I’d have to call the extended warranty company to try to get that refunded.
The only way they said they could help me in changing cars is with a new one because they said they could do a car at their cost with some other incentives and rebates. According to the salesman the closest I could come to the 550 M Sport in power and fun at a “low cost” would be a 2020 M2 CS that they just got. It would be twice the payment of the 550 but apparently it has a 4 year warranty and free services for 3 years and he claims it will hold its value very well. Twice the car payment is a tough pill to swallow but I’m also reading about a lot of the 550 engine failures now and I’m at a crossroads. I was hoping to hear people on this forum that have had experience with a remanufactured 550 engine and what they would do in my position. |

You had the car for a whopping 2 days when the engine seized and the dealer's only help is to put you in a much more expensive car? That's no help IMHO. I would just make them fix the car and move on. Reman engines are just as dependable as their brand new counterparts.

In every way. The dealer is trying to work you over, and they will if you let them. Don't let them. Look up lemon laws for your state. I am sure you are protected. Then tell them they can make it right and fix everything including the transmission they just broke free of charge or they can speak to your lawyer. I'm sure the law is on your side

You should probably go ahead and speak to a lawyer. Most lawyers will give you a free consultation. It may be very well worth the 1.5 hours you'll spend talking with a lawyer to make sure you know all of your options before talking to the dealership again.

As stated all of it is fishy.
One of the main things is they jump on trying to get you into something else without knowing what caused the engine to let go to begin with. This takes time with an engine tear down, yet they offer something else or a remanufactured so quickly, suggesting they knew of a problem. This tow service, you can bet there was damage. Just so you know none of the BMW's come out of park easy, they all have a trick to put them in neutral. So no way they should of did what they did. The way I see it you have three choices; 1. Cut your losses now. 2. Hedge your bet and consult a lawyer. 3. Take your chances and hope it will work out. Also, is this towing company tied to the dealership? If so the whole deal can be wrapped into one thing. |

Hundred percent agree took me 3 wks to get bmw to approve transmission on car I just bought. They should have at least done full download of car try make sure no flash or donuts etc. Sound like they had this planned out . Also lemon and magnusson or however it's spelled should protect you in this case

I would take the new engine tho and try for transfer case and transmission if they dont you should have no problem down line getting it fixed since you have records of this. BMW is pretty good about goodwilling things when its warranted
