Brembo Brake DIY conversion BMW M5 to F10

I will use this thread for a single point to obtain part numbers and DIY as I get installed on car. Will create a step by step DIY for anyone to follow. Please do not post other options in this thread. This is designed for a person to go to www.getbmwparts.com, Obtain OEM BMW parts, purchase Caliper adapters, and then do the install:

Good Video on how to change the rear Calipers which are identical to the OEM units with the exception of the adapter bracket, brake hose and cutting dust shield:

My research has shown:

ECS Tuning - 3-Liter European Pressure Brake Bleeder (BMW suggests 2 BA for pressure or about 30 PSI, I only went up to 25PSI) https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben.../007237sch01a/
ECS Tuning - Brake Bleeder Catch Bottle - https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben.../007481sch01a/

BMW - All parts available from www.getbmwparts.com Ask for Jason
All Bolts on the calipers are suggested TO BE REPLACED by BMW. This is mostly from what I can see due to Blue Semi permanent Thread lock being on all bolts.

Front Brakes:
Left Caliper 34117845747
Right Caliper 34117845748
Left Rotor 34112284101
Right Rotor 34112284102 Pads set 34112284869
Brake hoses 34322284318 each (2 needed, one per side)
Brake pad wear sensor, front left x 1 34356791958
Inner hex bolt M8X12 x 2 34111123072 (Different size than Rear)

Rear:
Rear caliper left 34217845815 (Optional, Identical part number as stock, just not painted)
Rear caliper right 34217845816 (Optional, Identical part number as stock, just not painted)
Rear pads set 34212284389
Rear brake lines 34322284319 each x 2 (These ARE different than stock and connect differently, Much easier to install over stock_
Left Rotor 34212284103
Right Rotor 34212284104
Cable bracket, left 1 34212284377 (This holds a "Banjo Bolt onto the caliper and suggested torque is 40 NM)
Cable bracket, right 1 34212284378 (This holds a "Banjo Bolt onto the caliper and suggested torque is 40 NM)
Brake pad wear sensor, rear x 1 34352284343
Inner hex bolt M8X14 2 34211161806 (Should be identical as stock, but good to replace)

MUST have at least 20 inch rims for Rotor clearance...

Must Bleed entire system after install. Left Rear, Right rear, right front, left front - In that order.
Rear Electronic parking brake can just be moved from Old Brake to new Brake. You can use a Star Socket to turn the Electronic center gear CLOCKWISE until it gives you a little resistance. Then, Ensure you clamp the caliper down to compress it back to stock. This can be done with a scan tool or coding but this is mechanical short cut.

Brake Grease on rear brake pads but NO BRAKE grease on front pads.

https://www.drive2.ru/l/5698330/

https://www.drive2.ru/o/b/2498650/

Pics at end of this thread and will build DIY as they get completed. MUST make sure you torque bolts to proper specs and do everything the RIGHT way. Use www.newtis.com for procedures and torque.

First Tip: BEFORE STARTING go find yourself a 9mm HEX socket. THEY DO NOT EXIST for the most part in stores! To remove the OEM brake assembly you MUST Have a 9 mm Hex socket and most tool kits go from 8mm then to 10mm! So ORDER one on amazon before you start. There are several mods you have to make. On the Front Brake dust shields you have to trip the top AND bottom of the shield with a Dremel by about 1-2 inches on each side. Then use a Metal cutting disc with Dremal to cut the outline out of the metal shield. Then remove sharp edges.

The rear shields will NOT come off of the car like the fronts, so they have to be cut ON the car. Torque of the Bolts to hold on the Adapter to axle is 115 NM and the M5 Caliper bolts to the Adapter on the car is 110NM. When installing the brake adapters onto the axle, you can see one side is flat and the other has a slight arch to it, the Russian writing engraved on them should face INWARD on car which will place the adapater with flat side facing car. Will do a complete write up once this project is finished.

I am adding pictures of the rear Calipers and the Axle modification I had to make for the adapters to fit. Had to remove 2-3 mm from axle and does not effect structural stability. Rear Adapters can be installed upside down by mistake, so this will reassure the correct installation. Also note that you SHOULD purchase the M5 Brake line holder AND the M5 Brake line itself. They are different for OEM units.

I personally wouldn't touch the rear, they look exactly the same as my 550i, save some money.

While I'm not sure if the 550i one will work with the brakes, parts wise, the M5 does have a different Master Cylinder than the 550 (34336799903 vs 34336796729 respectively). Interestingly enough, the M5 master cylinder is used on the M5, M6, and the 640 and 650, but not the 550.

That's great news! I wonder if the same is true for the rear brakes.

Did you figure out if the rear brake modification will have any influence on the EM brake? I think if it does have the problem, the best we can do is to get a pair of Brembo sport drilled/slotted rotors and paint or not paint the rear calipers. Just to have a better look...

All of my research points to the M5 and f10 using an interchangeable master cylinder. The caliper adapters from Russia are TOP NOTCH and at 440.00 for a front and rear set, a real deal. He even includes the bolts. Torque Specs on Caliper adapter bracket: М12-1.75 torque 115 Nm (~80 ft lbs),

Brembo does NOT MAKE A F10 retrofit kit for the our cars. I spoke to their engineers directly. That means all these kits you see online for brembo f10 calipers are someone taking either m5 calipers or GT calipers, custom making the bracket adapter and making a 4 thousand dollar profit!!! Not one of those kits states a new master cylinder is needed. Even DINAN makes a brembo brake kit for the f10. So.... Where are all of these calipers coming from??? My opinion is they are m5 calipers, repainted, new adapter bracket and then sold at crazy profit.... We will see....

is it worth doing the rears since the M5 caliper doesn't really scream out look at me!!!

That is a personal preference, but I don't want to take any chances.

Mike
that's what i thought? i think i read somewhere someone just did the front upgrade but never the rear. after all is said and done are you going to have both front and rear calipers for sale or just the fronts?

exactly! i would love to do the upgrade eventually but i'm still working on the aesthetics. eventually

Ok, so HERE is the OFFICIAL Brembo Brake application list right from the lips of Brembo! Now, they tell me they DO NOT MAKE a brembo setup for an F10, yet it is part of their application guide. You will also notice that the Rotor diameter is the same as the M5 setup. There are different part numbers listed between the M5 and the F10 on this guide (so how dont they make a kit? hmmm), but with the other cross reference showing Master Cyclinders are interchangeable between M5 and F10 5 series, and the fact that the M5 to Non M mod is HUGE in Europe and Asia, it does look like the adapters made in Russia (marked F10 by the way with match rotor size as Brembo guide), things do look like they will work. Now, I have to decide, do I get the Dust shields painted Blue as well? Caliper, Rotor Center and Dust shield all OEM M5 Blue?
you know, when i start my caliper project here next month i'm painting the calipers, rotor/dust shield and hat Matte black so aesthetics wise it'll compliment my bronze wheels. i'm not sure if you painting the shield blue will look tacky because the calipers and the hat will compliment each other? but the shield...i'm trying to picture it? might depend on what wheels you have?
