Falken FK510

Hi, been a while! I’m finally fed up with replacing the obscenely expensive OEM 20” Dunlop Sport Maxx runflats. Had several sidewall bulges now, couple of punctures and of course general wear and a VERY harsh ride.

Have done tons of searches on swapping these out for non run flats and there are so many posts that conflict advice.

I’ve been thinking about trying the Falken FK510 tyres - has anyone used these and can anyone recommend them? I can’t tell if they have rim protection on any of the pics. Has anyone’s swapped their OEM 20” runflats on their F10 for these or can indeed recommend any others?

I’m willing to take a punt on these for £600’ish, as opposed to £1k for the Dunlop’s.

Cheers

I had Falken's... ONCE!! They started out moderately quiet and as they wore started to HOWL!!! They got so bad I thought I was driving a 4X4 with off road tires! I couldn't wait to get rid of them! IIRC, I got new tires after around 20K miles as I couldn't take it anymore.

Thank you. I have had them fitted now and will report back with my opinion on them. First impressions are that the ride is a LOT softer than with the Dunlops. I can feel more movement in the sidewalls when pushing on too, but I have spent 2 years with the runflats, so it's just that I'm sensitive to the change in feel. The tyre company could not balance my wheel though - had to take it to BMW to be done 'properly'. Car's being detailed next week, so will post some pics.

As promised, a mini review of the new tyres after 500 miles.

Compared to the Dunlop runflats they are a softer ride on everyday road surfaces. I can’t notice any more road noise than before and handling seems very good. I pushed it into some corners a few times and I can sense more tyre wall movement - but it’s minimal to be honest. Certainly not a ‘light and day’ difference.

Handling in the wet seems very positive, no problems with grip at all.

Price wise these are half the price of the Dunlops.

There is some rim protection, although no where near as big on the tears as the Dunlop’s. The fronts are about the same.

These tyres also come with the red and yellow spots that aid in the wheel balancing. They had to be rebalanced a couple of times as the ‘mobile’ service simply cannot balance tyres on the drive(!). Had to take it to BMW who then rebalanced them totally for £60. They were miles out!

These cost £600’ish for 2 x 245/35/20 and 2 x 275/30/20 from Tyres on the Drive.

Hope this review helps someone!

You're very welcome! I have done another few hundred miles now and in bad weather too (muddy and wet), I can honestly say they are superb in bad weather. In fact better than the Dunlops in my opinion. They are actually A rated for wet anyway, whereas Dunlops are B (I think).

For circa £600 I would recommend - but don't forget to make provisions for a puncture! TyreWeld, spare wheel etc...

I have the FK510s on the exact same size that the OP does for 7k miles now and I have ZERO complaints! Very confidence inspiring in the rain, quiet, rides well, wears even, I don't see why anyone would spend the extra money to get PSS unless you're making serious power in your car

I've got the Falken FK510 tires as well. I like them a lot and would consider purchasing them again when it comes time.
